Looks as though Khovanov is going to miss at least 2 games, one against Bathurst and one against Halifax, to play for Team Russia at the U18 Five Nations Cup next week. Many other CHL players are going as well but I find it kind of strange that the teams/players do this right in the middle of their seasons. They do it for the WJHC at Christmas and the U-17 in November.

The U-17 is just 16 year olds, it just seems weird to me that right during the playoff push and towards the end of the season that guys would leave the lineup to go play in the 5 Nations Cup.

The players that go to the WJC miss 8-10 games. The league is no where near shut down and these are the top players in the leagues. It's 5-day tournament with only 17 YOs. I agree that the timing of the tourney is not the best though.

Players really don’t miss that many games for the tournament, it’s the pre-tournament games/camps/rest afterwards that cause them to miss more games. Rubtsov missed 4 league games when he went for Russia to the World Juniors. Guys don’t miss as many games as people think, unless you’re on Team Canada and then they make a big spectacle out of choosing their team and take guys away for even longer then necessary. Either way, the time of this tournament isn’t ideal.

Don't remember players ever missing games for this before.

CHL agreement doesn’t allow teams to make decisions in regards to international tournaments.

Is this a new tournament? Don't remember players ever missing games for this before. It used to be in April. It is the World U18 championships in April (with CHL players from the teams eliminated in the first round). Not the same tournament.

Is this a new tournament? Don't remember players ever missing games for this before. It used to be in April. This is a completely different tournament. Khovanov will be participating in the 2018 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament in Plymouth, Michigan. The April tournament is the IIHF World U18 Championship. Russia is hosting. It's from April 19-29.

Either way, the time of this tournament isn’t ideal. The tournament may start Dec 26, but the players typically leave their teams around Dec 15. If the tournament is in Europe they can often miss an extra week afterwards ... and many often get time with their families since they missed Christmas. A player can be gone a full month for the WJC.
