This is the second time in three years that the team made additions that should have made them better in the second half of the season and instead they got worse. It's easy to forget what a train wreck the second half of 2016 was because of the great playoff run that followed. Shannon brought in a goalie that couldn't stop a beach ball for two second round picks and the Cats threw away a sizable lead that they had over SJ for first place in the division. This year they added Miromanov, Khovanov, Sylvestre and Phelan and while not everyone agreed with all the moves made the general consensus was that it was a pretty decent team and should win more games than they lost. That didn't happen. Looking at rosters on paper it's laughable some of the teams they finished behind and even Chicoutimi had more wins than the Cats. It's highly doubtful that a playoff run is going to save the season this time. Lots of blame to go around and I think at this point wholesale changes are needed to get this franchise back on track. There's just no way they can go into next season with the status quo with all the losing that's been going on for the last two and a half seasons. Never know, Irving just may have the same thoughts going through his mind.

To change the subject a little ... I note that Cape Breton West Islanders were eliminated from the NS Major Midget playoffs. Do we bring up Stephen Fox now for the playoffs ... or even just to hang out ?

Do we bring up Stephen Fox now for the playoffs ... or even just to hang out ? I’m guessing Stephen Fox will report to South Shore (MHL). They’re in a series against Amherst. Wouldn’t be surprised if Sean Stewart is with the Wildcats for the playoffs.

I'd like to see Anderson MacDonald really step up here in the playoffs he had a slow end to the year 1 goal in the last 12 games. He is more than capable of being a difference maker in a playoff series.

He is more than capable of being a difference maker in a playoff series. I do hope also that he can turn it around. He did have a good January. For a guy who scored 29 goals in 50 games as a 16 year old rookie I would say that much more than 27 goals in 58 goals was expected from him this year at least from my part. He started the year as probably the laziest player on the team and then when he decided to skate it was evident that he can't skate very well with the puck or make good passes. As you can tell I am not a fan of his. Maybe I should give him a break because it is not his fault if Shannon overpaid for him, especially now that we know that the Wildcats are going to be in the lottery for the 1st overall pick in this year's Q draft. I always say that if you can't or won't skate, you better be able to fill the net in goals, otherwise you are a big liability on the team and his minus 31 which is tied with LeCoultre is pretty well at the bottom of the league. There are guys that get going when the going gets tough in the playoffs and guys that go hide. Let's hope that he's one that gets going. I'm sure that Shannon is keeping his fingers crossed.

I find MacDonald a bit of a lazy player away from the puck. He is at his best when going to the net and banging in rebounds. I think his early success (in Sher last year) and the price that was paid for him this year has his head a little too big. He will always be a goal scorer and will probably always reach that 25-30 range ... but with more effort he could be much closer to a complete player.
We'll probably deal him at 19 and so we'd like to see him improve his battle level and improve the defensive side of his game. His goal scoring ability will always be there.

I found that MacDonald started slow and fought some injuries which may have affected his play - i am a new poster to this site but have been reading for a while and get tired of how so many people blame the players (macdonald and slyvestre amongst others) for decisions made by the GM/Coach in acquiring them - I hope these two players really step it up so all the armchair GM/Coaches are put in their place.

really What is wrong with the coaching staff? Exactly. The GM you can have issues with going back years. But considering they stripped the team down to a skeleton last year and chased a futility record. I don't think Darren Rumble is the problem. The games I have seen they seem to have team ready to compete each night but it's not been the best mix to get much better this fast. Nonetheless they won't blow the GM/coach out now with a bid in to host the cup. Yeah I don't see how losing in 4 in a series you should lose in 4 really makes ownership do anything different. They seem committed to the status quo through next season from the outside looking in. Having one of the older teams in the Q and having spent assets to get better, I think losing in 4 would put an exclamation mark on the failure that was the 18-19 season for the coach and GM. I think they should clean house regardless, but the owner may need a 4 game sweep to clinch it in his mind...

I prefer this match-up over Bathurst or Halifax. I'll play the role of Positive Pete. Wildcats in 6. Well damn.

Congrats guys. It's a fun feeling pulling off an upset like that. 3rd biggest upset in the history of the Q playoffs from the sounds of it. Good luck in the next round.
