I agree with all the comments, but there is something to be said for loyalty to your current players. I'd still rather draft a new guy, but showing the hockey world you stick with your guys goes a long way to helping convince players to come to your program in the future. On the other hand, if you cut a guy that has been here two years, in favour of a younger kid that you haven't really seen play, it doesn't reflect well on the team. You know what you get with Le Coultre ... which in my opinion is not enough for this impact slot ... but there is an expectation of improvement from 18 to 19. We have seen many Dmen really break out in the Q at 19. My real annoyance with this is we are gearing up for a 2019-20 contending season ... I think ... and Le Coultre won't be part of that. So we could use the high pick and select a 17 yo that would have a full year to develop before our contending season. If we pass this year, then we will have to draft next year at what will probably be around 40th overall, and that doesn't sit well with a contending season. I don't think they are looking far enough ahead with this decision. Pretty hard to sell loyalty with all the turnover the last 18 months, they basically turned over the team twice. I doubt keeping Lecoultre even moves the needle in regards to that. I will confess that I thought he had a good playoffs . I was never a fan of his , but I really thought he stepped up his play and intensity in the post season .

It's very simple...
Even if you would to get nothing in return and just have to let Le Coultre go, the question is would you trade him for who would be available at the 13th pick?
If the answer is yes... then you use that pick!

Wow, didn't think we had so many Q qualified GM's on this board! Anyone tried applying? If it's that simple anyone can do it, right?!
With no more Welsh, Le Coultre will put up 40+ points next season as the primary puck moving/PP dman. Spence would come in as the #2 guy Puck Mover/PP guy until he's ready to take the torch in 2019-2020. Le Coultre's biggest knack is decision making and confidence which with the right training can be improved upon, other than that he has all the other tools to be a successful puck-moving dman
They're going to be strong next season, likely not a Win the League strong but strong enough to bring business and crowds to the events centre on a nightly basis. 2019-20 will depend on how next season goes but if everything progresses nicely we should see more of a contender in 2019-20 by adding 1-2 pieces on defence and filling any forward gaps and we'll see how the goalie situation unfolds
Going to be a nice next couple of years that I'm looking forward to it and so should 60% of you, rather than sulking and complaining about every little move an exec makes or jumping on every mistake a player makes

Even if Lecoultre puts up 40 points, what does that accomplish? I would rather add a 17 year old that may only put up 30 but who can grow into a impact guy at 18 and 19 in years that the team can potentially contend. I don't find he(Lecoultre) has high upside, his decision making is questionable, his vision and hockey sense are average at best, he competes but he is undersized. At best he is a #3-4 guy. I think they did the right thing in 16-17 to blow it up, but they kept Shannon around and after they accumulated a ton of young assets, he traded half of them away for patch work moves instead of being patient, now they are in terrible shape on defense with not much in the pipeline. Other than Spence, they don't have much in terms of 2001 and 2002 d-men to build around. Tucker is the only real 2000 and he is not a high upside guy...this is another reason they need to draft a young, high upside d-man on Thursday. I don't think that right now they have the core to win a championship either in 2020 or 2021. Pelleter should be a star and they have some good young forwards, but the defense is a mess after trading Bellamy and Jacques(and him not reporting in the first place).

He's a one year and done player.. If he was a 17 year old player I would agree with you but hoping 19 year old puts in the right training and improves is too late. Especially when we have the 13th overall pick.. This same pick landed Vitali Abramov 2 years ago and we all know what hes has done in the Q.

But enjoy the kool aid. Some fans need it in order to keep teams stable in these markets while being poorly managed and making some wrong decisions while hardcore fans over analyze and expect a certain standard. I'm one who thinks Moncton fans have over-reacted slightly to their situation of the past few years. But I think many here could have and would have done a better job as GM then Shannon did.
