Could even be a 3 year window depending on what management decides to do. Pelletier, Spence, Desnoyers, Lavallee will all be still around at that point. (Not to mention a potential star drafted this year) My guess is they will all be used to speed up the rebuild, but that is a nice group of players to still have around for the 20-21 season. It would certainly be a long painful rebuild afterwards. Perhaps the Cats could deal some secondary youth prospects and deal McKenna Cyr and Khavanov as futures. Take a step back next year and then back in contention for 2020-21 when Spence and Pelletier are 19 and Desnoyers and Lavallee are 18.

Your definition of a skating issue is different than mine. What you describe I call a conditioning issue which is to be expected after a lengthy illness. I think what mostly gets in his way is his tendency to take bad penalties. Also he is not the hardest worker but has improved on that this year from what we saw back in September and early October. He was hard to like back then, but his more recent play has started to grow on me. His effort level has been much better. I think the opportunity with team Russia helped him realize what he can do a this level. He's been better with the penalties too although I think being on the road helped. It seems he gets called on reputation in the games we see at home with the Maritime referees and not as much with the Quebec referees. You don't get 19 minor penalties based on reputation...just stop.

That is an interesting angle ... hadn't really thought of that, and I don't think it has been discussed much as a possibility on here. Load up this year, using 2019/20 players as futures ... then build again for 2020/21 around the young core ... I kind of like it ...

However, McKenna (assuming he's back) and Cyr will be two of the best if not the 2 best 20's in the league. Khovanov is likely the best euro. On top of that, overagers and euro's often get traded at a discount. It would be too difficult to re-tool and replace the talent you already have to go for it in 20-21. Although the Cats could win this year with a little D help, next year is the peak point of the Cats cycle.

I think Halifax, as the Mem Cup host, is going to load up during the trade period; they will want to go into the Mem Cup as the Q champs and not as the host team. While Moncton might be at Halifax's level right now, I don't think that will be true in January, and it might make more sense to let the team (maybe with a tweak if the Lecoultre rumours are true) go as far as they can this year, and build for next year. Not knocking this year's 20s, but the 20s next year will be a class above, and the young kids will have another year under their belt next year. I think the team could be serious contenders this year and the next two years.

It hasn't been discussed because up until now I think most Cats fans have felt that next year is our year and that's what we should be building toward. Deal away Mckenna and Cyr and Khovanov and next year is gone. I don't think that we are a legitimate contender this year but can probably get to round 3, and then anything can happen. It being a Memorial Cup year then the prices to load up to get over the hump will be very high, and I don't want to pay it. I'd like to add some defensive help at a fair price ... and if LeCoultre is being shut down then maybe look at filling the empty Euro slot. Otherwise I just want to roll with what we have. I think if we try to do more than just that then our Bat 1st will be demanded.
