Right now the Wc are tied with Chicoutimi for 6th/7th, Chi is hot(7-3-0) while the Cats are cold(2-6-2), if the trend continues the WC are destined for 7th in the conference. Quebec is 5 points back with each team having 17 left to play, so 8th is not out of the question, though the schedule gets easier.
The top 3 are pretty much locked in, BC(77 in 50), halifax(75 in 50) and Rimouski(71 in 51), those 3 will face the 6th 7th or 8th place making them likely WC opponents. Halifax is really banged up so my money is on Bc for 1st. For 4th and 5th, CB(66 in 50) and Char(63 in 49) are likely to face each other round 1, WC are unlikely to make up 7 pointsplus a game in hand for CB and 4 points plus 2 games in hand for Char.
Current matchups…Bc vs que hal vs WC Rim vs Chi and Cb-Cha.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but first two rounds are in the division, then round 3 crosses over?

Rimouski is only 5 up on CB who has 1 in hand.
CB is only 3 up on Charlottetown who has 1 in hand.
Don't think anyone is locked in yet in that group. Too much hockey left to be played. Some big road trips over the next 2-3 weeks will start to settle some of these positioning battles.

With CB/Cha I meant locked into a 1st round matchup, but as you said, if somebody gets hot an another gets cold it could change.

Also wondering about the new playoff format ? Looks like first 2 rounds are within each conference, then crossover 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 , not sure what the WHL does but the OHL used to be crossover at the 4 th round between conference champs.
So according to the new playoff format it could be 2 teams from the same conference in the presidents cup finals ? Not a fan of this format. I would say that it will be huskies vs voltigeurs in the final.
Thoughts ? ......

Round 3 is not a crossover like we have had in the past. Before round 3, the four team remaining are ranked by the overall standings, and 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. We use to have a crossover where West 1 played East 2, and East 1 played West 2 ... that can still happen but is not set. Also keep in mind that division winners still get ranked as 1 and 2 in each conference.

If you stayed within the conference then you'd probably see RN vs Drum in Rd 3, when that is what the final should be. Drum can still finish in the 2nd to 4th seed ... still to be determined.

In terms of fairness this is the next best thing aside from the 1 vs 16 format. You still get your rivalries/less travel in the first two rounds and also leave open the possibility of having a rivalry and the two best teams in the final. Obviously the disparity between East & West first and second round playoff match-up’s this year is going to be a bit of a farce. Not much you can do about that though. It’s just the way things shook out between the haves and the have nots this season. The Q has done the conference playoff format before and I don’t recall there being anything like this season so hopefully it won’t become an ongoing concern.

Only issue this year is they decided to switch to the conference format after the schedule was out. I figure next year there will be more "in-conference" games, i.e. more games against the between the Maritime teams and the Eastern division (Rim, B-C, Chi and Qc). It is illogical that Quebec, Rimouski etc. play more games against Rouyn and Val-d'Or than against 6 of the teams in their conference.

I would be all for seeing Rimouski, Quebec, Chicoutimi and Baie-Comeau once more, and seeing four of the Maritime Division teams once less. I don't know exactly what the four Quebec-based teams would have to do, but the Maritime teams would play each other 7 times each and one team 8 times to make that schedule work.
