Here is how I see the positional battles AT THIS POINT…obviously there will be trades and draft picks in June plus FA in the summer…I think Torchetti will want to put his stamp on the team, so I would not be shocked if Khovanov moves.
Some moves will depend 100% on how aggressive they are early in terms of contending. Do they go all in in June or just play a patient game and wait for December? Are they still trying this “be good every year” plan that doesn’t seem to yield a contender?
Goaltending…
Lavallee is a lock, the big question is how much he plays.
Gray(19) I heard they really like him and he’s been great in the MJAHL, I would not be shocked if they start out with him and Lavallee splitting duties.
MacDonald(19) Paradis(18) will be AF guys barring a huge camp.
Chambers(17) I believe did not show last year.
Defense…
Aspirot(20) is a lock, as is Spence(18). At this point they are the top pair. Dejong(19) and Stewart(18) are pretty safe bets to be on the top 6. Berube(17) is likely a safe bet from the prospects. Dow(17) and Hebert(18) will compete for a spot and likely make it. Right now those are the 7 I would bet on but I’m sure there will be trades and probably a draft pick to crack the lineup. Dejong Dow and Hebert are far from locks plus S.Stewart could be 8th D and play forward. Lots of options. If they are aggressive to contend they may add 2 top 4 D in June, one may be a Euro.
Anttalainen(20-Euro) and Huntley(20) they will try and trade.
Walker(17) left for NCAA and there are rumors he will play next year.
Keegan(19) and Webster(19) were no shows for NCAA.
Vanier(18) and Chalifour(18) I don’t see cracking the roster. They may get dropped before the draft.
Barrett(19) is an unknown.
Forward…
McKenna(20) and Cyr(20) should be OA locks.
Campannelli(20) is rumored to BBA for a pick(AA trade). Giguere(20) could be traded. Seitz(200 should be playing Jr.A.
Hudson(19) Pelletier(18) Desnoyers(17) J.Stewart(18) Foreman(18) are locks.
Khovanov(19) should be back but Torchetti may tire of all the dumb penalties and mediocre effort.
King(19) I see competing with incoming players. Alchorn(18) Parent(17) and Langlois(17) are favorites coming in.
Bergbauer(18) Watt(17) Crooks(17) Frlamand(17) Jackson(17) Rumsey(18) are guys that compete for spots.
Mason(19) and C.Murphy(19) may get dropped or they keep as AF guys.
Dawe(20) Cash(19) Walsh(19) Stammer(18) Hillier(18) Hayes(18) Freitas(18) were all NCAA guys last year.
The base is solid up front, again, it depends on how aggressive they want to be to contend. Right now they likely need 1 maybe 2 top 6 forward, plus at least one 3rd line guy. Euro draft, Q draft and FA may fill some of those holes.

I haven’t watched him this year but it looks like he had a pretty mediocre start to the year after his first midget season but seems to have picked it up late. Also, he’s still playing defence right? Elite Prospects lists him as a forward now. |

The offense could be scary good next season if things go right. Hopefully will be able to replace Capanelli through the draft.
Even if they don't go for it next season, I think they need to find a top 2-3 Defenceman to replace the loss of Sylvestre. I think to contend you need 2 guys to solidify your top 4.
Goaltending. get Lavallee lots of work early in a platoon role and then add a veteran guy mid season

I would target a top D-man right away before season starts , In the euro draft go for the best player available when we pick regardless of position , especially if Khovanov does not return ?

Elite Prospects lists him as a forward now. He was still playing D for Lac Saint-Louis Lion's. Also, he's not the first Lion to go for the NCAA. It seems Goyens has strong USA links as we can see lots of their's heading for that league. Goaler Devon Levi is said to take the same path, as well as Choupani and Tinling I do believe. Not even mentionning Bucheler. That said, I would love to see Walker in MON. But not sure the timing would be great next year... |

Are the picks right that are posted on this board? If so it really sets you guys up in an interesting position. You have AB’s first rounder which can be no worse than 3rd overall. I believe 2 2nd rounders a 3rd and 2 4th rounders. That’s a good amount you f assets. The first would be untouchable but after that you could fill a hole or 2 early.
I think you with the forwards you have you might be forced to go for it. The problem is goaltending. That is a very big question mark and might need to be upgraded. It really hard to see which way you guys go next year.

All their focus is going to be on building a winning team now that they have the avenir center figured out....... Moncton doesn't have the assets to load up for 2019/2020 season, unless they trade away Pellitier and Spence after they go for broke ! They have a good core to build around and I believe they will be strong next year and depending on the goaltending they get' should be able to go deep into playoffs. I see Torchetti getting to build the type of team that the organization wants , hopefully our first round pick turns out as good as our last 3 top picks !!! Pelletier, Desnoyers and Spence . |
