At the risk of being told that I am too harsh on the young goalie and too quick to judge I offer this.
Last year everybody on this board - me included - complained that Lavallée should have been utilized more by Torchetti against weaker teams because it was hurting his development. Was he under utilized because of pressures from above to win at all costs or was it simply because Torchetti had no confidence in the 16 yr old goalie?
During the pre-season games that just ended yesterday, Lavallée was used in four games for a total 218:24 minutes which is one period short of four full games. I know the sample is small but those minutes are the second highest for any goalie on any team in pre season games this year. You can say that he is got a fair trial.
When I look at his pre season stats I see the worst saves percentage of any goalie of any team (.791) and third from the bottom in GAA (4.95). Not exactly confidence boosting stats.
I only saw one pre season game and in that game the Wildcats outshot Halifax by a 52 to 19 margin and lost the game with Lavallée in nets. On one goal he tried and failed to stop a shot that was coming on the ice with his glove. That looked to me like a play that a house league goalie would attempt. There might have been a deflection that I didn’t see. Until then he was having a good game and after that goal it all felt apart.
I do hope that he gets a fair chance when the regular season starts and that he forces the coach to use him more than last year with his play.
