Yup ... I figured he'd get 3 for the hit. I'm okay with it as long as they stay consistent with other similar hits ... but you know they won't. It was clearly a shot to the head and deserved the major.

If that's 7 games and new precedent is set for open ice hits to the head, there is going to be some huge suspensions this year. I get that head contact isn't allowed, and players not needing to protect themselves from vulnerable positions... but put yourself in White's position. If you were playing, is there much you could do different in that situation? victim of his size i guess.

I thought it was worse than the Spadafore hit tbh, so if this is the new standard, I'm fine with it.
If a Quebecois kid smokes an anglophone and gets 1 game for the same hit, then this is garbage.

It will be interesting to see who comes into the lineup this weekend and how this affects the lines. I think Gould will come in, at least for Saturday's game. I also think Stairs stays on the top line for a bit but if it's not clicking they'll try someone else.

First, I hope Sean Stewart is OK and will recover quickly from an apparent concussion. If a 7-game suspension really is the new benchmark for a check to the head, then the league has clearly sent a message to its players that they truly are serious about reducing head trauma. It is interesting that a few fans of other teams are equally surprised, as the Sea Dogs faithful, about the length of this suspension. When I saw it live, I felt that James White had led with his shoulder (elbows in) with Sean Stewart's chest/shoulder as the primary target. It appeared to me that White caught Stewart flush in the chest - but clearly the slow motion replay shows contact to the chin/face. I'll also admit that I was on the side of "a bigger player just happened to hit a slightly smaller player with an open ice check". But I'll at least give the league credit for clearly stating that size doesn't matter when it comes to head injuries. Having suffered a couple of concussions, I'd rather they focus on finding ways to significantly reduce these types of injuries.

It was more games than I expected but to echo everyone else I am fine with it so long as the league and it's officials continue to send the same message in all cases.
It does make me wonder though how you ever hit certain players now. Like its a league filled with 16-20 year olds. The size differences in a lot of cases is huge. With the speed of the game and everything else, its pretty hard for say a 6'4" guy to check say...Brady Burns or Josh Lawrence, without hitting the head.
I'd love to see the hip check become common place....but then everyone complains about those being dirty and targetting the knee etc etc.
