Questions abound regarding resuming operations at all levels of hockey(and organized sports in general for that matter). With the sudden cancellation of seasons, and the resulting stalled progress of prospects, I was wondering if it might be a possibility that top 20 year olds that would ordinarily be starting their pro careers next year will end up back in junior instead? If that happens, what teams are affected the most trying to find space for only 3 top 20 years olds?

Whats the cut off date for birth dates? I notice players like Khovanov are not talked about to return to the league next year as 2000's.

My biggest question is, can anyone born at anytime in 2000 play again next year? Are imports allowed to play as 20 year olds? The CHL had a graduating players banner on their page with Sokolov, Khovanov, McIsaac, Rodrigue and Alexandrov on it.

Well, 20 year old players who are drafted signed are eligible to play professional hockey, AHL, ECHL, etc. The guys mentioned above will play pro hockey (assuming those leagues operate) next year. It's very rare a signed player is sent back to Junior, as all of those guys mentioned above don't have anything left to prove in the Q. Plus, an actual paycheck is probably a nice thing for a 20 year old kid haha.

Wasn’t there talk amongst the league at one time about changing the rules so that 20 yo goalies wouldn’t count toward your 3 20s? Did anything happen with that? I assume it got voted down. It was awhile ago. Also you can draft euro goalies again so if they go that route they likely wouldn’t keep DLC.

I would like the option of 5 slots between OA's and Euros. max 3 Euros. So you could have 3 Euros but only 2 OA's.

It would definitely help teams that have trouble attracting Euros like Val-d'Or. I could see it being a bit abusable tho.

Even if a team had 5 OA's, the 4th and 5th ones likely would not be a Mckenna type guy, more of a Huntley which equals an average Euro pretty much. I think bigger markets would have more Euros and smaller ones, better OA's, it would even itself out.

I actually think you would see less Euro's in the league from applying the rule you suggested. your average 20 YO is better than your average 17-18 YO Euro and would be far easier and cheaper to have on the team. I think teams would start only bringing in elite Euros and the middle of the road guys wouldnt have place. The Lehmus's, Jobin's, Peeters, etc probably wouldnt be in the league. There would be far more Dylan Seitz calibre players imo. It would definitely help the small markets be more competitive though and would help the product overall. So maybe that is a good thing.

Having a 4th OA wouldnt end up being an average 20 year old though. You are talking more about guys that are playing in the MHL. Average 20 year olds are already in the Q. The fringe 20 year olds are whats being kept in that scenario. For example Ben Higgins who was a 30 pt player at 19 was a top 5 scorer in the MHL (81 pts). Peeters scored 23 goals last season for Halifax, I dont see how he would be replaced. The MHL and Quebec AAA would definitely lose some talent, but we'd probably see some FA 20 year olds spill over from other leagues in Canada as well. A rebuilding team that could only land 1 euro would be able to add some more depth with a 4th 20 year old. Some other examples of 20 year olds that might make the cut in this scenario last year: Charles Farmer Derek Dicaire Enrico Di Cesare Dominic Cormier In the end I support anything that would help the leagues parity but also be fair to all teams. To me you start by exempting 20 year old goalies.

Just a couple of things, Peeters plays for Halifax who usually has the best Euros in the Q on average. they were expecting a lot more from him, he is a good scorer but not much else. He put up 33pts in 57 games and Higgins had 28 in 65 games at 19, I think Higgins would have likely at least matched Peeters with top 6 ice time, probably beat him by 7-10 points plus been a better all around player. All that being said, Halifax would likely always have 2 Euros maybe 3. While a team like Bathurst would have one or two guys like Higgins instaed of an euro most years.

I suppose the rule could also allow teams to run away with the league even easier as well. in 18-19 when Halifax lost Zadina to the AHL and failed to land Fagemo, they could have added 2 more stud 20 YO's.
I think the overall effect could be positive but it has its pitfalls as well.

All that being said, Halifax would likely always have 2 Euros maybe 3. While a team like Bathurst would have one or two guys like Higgins instaed of an euro most years. Peeters isn’t their typical euro pick. They weren’t expecting a lot more from him. They drafted him out of Selects Academy, extremely late in that draft. He was never a high end euro that they’re accustomed too, he was the type of Euro you bring in at 17 and hope develops into a high end Q player at 19. No body was ever expecting him to be a one and done or 1st round NHL pick. That’s the typical euro player Halifax gets their hands on, not a guy like Peeters. I think all you’d be doing is keeping the fringe Q guys in the league and there isn’t anything wrong with that necessarily but I also don’t think you’d see a lot of teams using those slots because quite frankly keeping a Ben Higgins type player, instead of developing young guys at the Q level doesn’t make sense. You’d be pushing too many young guys down in the lineup also and that doesn’t make sense from a development perspective.
