Now that we are through July, believe it or not, but QMJHL hockey is on the horizon. The Islanders haven't announced any news regarding training camp yet, but we should expect some announcements in the coming days.
Earlier this summer some free agent names were added to our pre-camp roster:
-Konnor Benjamin is an 03 forward who played last season with South Shore Jr. A. He scored 2-5-7 in 31 games and is a product of the South Shore MAAA program.
-Alexis Cote is an 03 forward who is a product of the Levis MAAA program. He did not play last year, but the previous year as a 16 y/o he scored 6-5-11 in 26 games.
-Zach Lorette is an 04 forward who played last season with the Halifax Mac's MAAA. He scored 4-6-10 in 22 games. As a 15 y/o in 19-20 he scored 8-7-15 in 35 games with Valley MAAA. Lorette's Jr. A rights are owned by Valley. Lorette is 6'2" and 200 lb, so he brings nice size to training camp.
There was a story in The Guardian today about 2019 draft pick Matt McQuaid. McQuaid attended camp as a 16 y/o in 2019. Last season he did not participate in our limited training camp and he played for Mount St. Charles prep in Rhode Island. He is planning on attending our camp this season with the hopes of landing a spot on our crowded blueline.
And while we are at it, it is worth mentioning that the Hlinka-Gretzky U18 summer tournament is on the go right now in Piestany, Slovakia. Matvei Michkov is ripping it up for Russia, scoring 2 goals and putting up 2 assists in their opener vs. Finland. It's all a pipe dream... he's not going to be on PEI with us, but it's still fun to watch him put up the points.
