The Sea Dogs have a couple of big tests coming up this week - starting off with a visit by the Titan on Wednesday night.
The Dogs have been on fire of late winning the past 4 by a score of 32-7. The Titan lost their last game in Val-D'or.
Can the Sea Dogs keep up this pace. A win by the Dogs will have them up by 4 points on the Titan with the Titan having 3 games in hand.
Like to see the Dogs keep up their scoring touch. Any word on Sevigny? He missed the last game to injury.
Go Sea Dogs Go!!

Let's hope they are ready on all levels. If they can take the the next 2 games, it should boost their confidence as we head down the final stretch.

2-1 SeaDogs after 2. Fast game. The Dogs killed off a terrible tripping call late in the second.
Should be a fun third.
Go Sea Dogs Go!!

It would be very interesting to know how many minutes Kidney was on the ice. It seemed he was on every other shift. Good win by the Dogs. They definitely were the better team, but Bednar kept the Titan in the game.

Good win for the Dogs. Nice seeing the Francis/ Daoust/Trenholm line have great success.
Some very lame calls by the refs tonight. They had their say.
Missed what Villeneuve did to get the 10min misconduct.
On to Friday against the Islanders.

I think everyone seemed to miss what he did. Nobody around me saw anything. I thought for sure Brady Burns was going to get an unsportsman for the celebration/hand gesture he made to Melanson in the box.

Also as much as the refs tried to ruin the game with some terrible calls. It was nice to see the new look Sea Dogs at home against a top competitive team. Really wish we had pried away Bennett MacArthur. Feels like he always has a great game against the Sea Dogs.

It was a pretty good game last night from Saint John.
SOG in the 1st seemed a bit high as they went end to end - showing 17-15 in the Sea Dogs' favour.
Bednar kept it as close as it was with several big saves - especially in the 3rd.
Ansons shows a -1 for the game, but he seemed to stand out as a solid 200 foot player. He was a good addition.
A few have been lauding Bennett MacArthur for his hard work and increased speed - but what stands out to me is seeing how he forever seems to get open somewhere around the right circle for a pass - or how he times it perfectly as he reaches the top of the blue paint at exactly the right time to bang at a rebound. I don't know if it's smarts or instinct or whatever - but it's something that goal scorers like he and Dufour seem to have.
Dufour led all players with 9 SOG. He's the king of lurking in the weeds and pouncing on loose pucks.
When Jacob Melanson was still playing U18 - I didn't know if he had the makings of an NHL player. He was big for his age group but not overly fast or overly gifted as a puckhandler. Now - there's a guy who has put in the work. He had 8 SOG in the game and has added another gear. He took a bit of a bad penalty late in the game - offensive zone - boarding - but that's the kind of mentality that's going to get him to the NHL. He looked good - quick - and plays with a lot of heart. He scored a goal sweeping it in while falling onto his back.
The penalty itself was off-camera - so I didn't see it. You always hate to see a late call decide the outcome.
Francis has been playing well lately. It surprised me looking at his TOI numbers a couple of weeks ago as he showed a lot less than most of the other forwards - somewhere around 15 minutes per game. I don't have the numbers from last night yet - but he's definitely playing more than 15 minutes in recent games. That slap-pass to the back door was as good as you'll see.
The Titan seemed able to hem the Sea Dogs in a few times when they had their top five on the ice. I don't know either team well enough to pinpoint breakdowns or tendencies. It would be easy to say that there was a lot of scrambling - but there's a lot of structure out there. When you have the puck behind your net and an opponent coming at you from two directions on the forecheck - reversing the puck is often hoping that somebody is going to be where you hope they're going to be.
I find it incredible how players successfully make passes through skates and sticks in the high slot on the breakout - things we were taught to never do. The skill level is incredible out there. Everybody can skate - and goaltenders bail you out 9 times out of 10 these days.
It's good to see the crowds returning in numbers.

I agree with the MacArthur point you made. He always seems to find that extra bit of space for a clear shot on net. One of my favourite players to watch play in the Maritimes division this year. It's interesting comparing him to Lapierre who spent time with the Capitals. In lasts night's game he'd be invisible for a few shifts but then he'd kick on with a great bit of puck control or just outskating players and you can see how he started the year in the NHL.
Think you can tell by Melanson that he's got the "needle" to make it far, I love it. After his goal the crowd was booing for a missed penalty call which led him to skate down the rink with his glove to his ear. Love it.
Francis has been odd? From my point of view he came in as "the autumn savior" that the sea dogs needed, but he isn't that player? He's got bags of talent, skill and vision. But he can let a game get away from him. Sometimes it's a bad penalty or a few missed shots. I think he'll show up in the playoffs but he's not the type to grab a game by the scruff of the neck and drag the team through.
As you mentioned there is a lot of talent on the ice when these two teams face off. At times there could be 7-8 players on the ice all have been drafted/signed to an NHL team.

It would be very interesting to know how many minutes Kidney was on the ice. It seemed he was on every other shift. Good win by the Dogs. They definitely were the better team, but Bednar kept the Titan in the game. Some observations: Larkin led the Titan in TOI with 23:45. Kidney was right behind at 23:25. For the Sea Dogs, Sevigny had 22:59 and Daoust 22:25. Daoust seems to lead all Sea Dogs' forwards in TOI every game - and that was part of the reason I mentioned him as a possible captain a few days ago - but others would know that sort of thing much better than I would - just a guess on my part. Some coaches seem to go to players often almost like having an assistant coach out on the ice - but that's just reading between the lines on my part. Actual SOG were 49-37 Sea Dogs - a bit wider than the game sheet showed. Puck battles won were 94-88 Sea Dogs and hits were 13-9 Sea Dogs - both of which point to the Sea Dogs being the more physical team - not by a wide margin - but still. . . The numbers don't point to an overly physical game. Dufour shows an impressive 8 scoring chances from the home plate area on his 10 SOG. Lawrence and Ansons both had 6 quality scoring chances. MacArthur and Melanson led the way for the Titan with 3 quality scoring chances each. Kuznetsov led all players in both hits (4) and shot blocks - tied with several others with 3 blocks each. He shows a -1, but he's very involved and plays a strong two way game. He can jump up and create havoc when he wants to. Every time I see him he seems to play a good game. Sevigny had 11 takeaways to lead the Dogs - and Kidney led the Titan with 10. I really didn't notice Kidney standing out all that much - but the numbers say otherwise - and good eye by yoyomamajoe. . . Whoever ventured that the Titan seem to rely on their top six forwards a lot nailed it - with six of their forwards showing between 20 and 23 minutes or so TOI - then a huge drop to the bottom six. Conversely - the Sea Dogs only show three forwards with 20-22 minutes (Daoust, Lawrence and Dufour) - and nobody else with more than 17 and a half minutes. Francis has increasingly become the fourth most played forward averaging about 17 minutes per game. He could be a dark horse for captain the way he's been playing.

I some how expect alot more from Ryan Francis, I watched him alot in CB and now it seems to me he really hasn't gotten stronger. He should be your best player on the ice but as times he is invisible during games. Dufour is a scoring machine....and dangerous. I'm liking Lawrence's game as of late. He is the top 5 in the league for faceoffs I'd say, and a gifted play maker....
For Bathurst
Bennett is deadly on the side of the net, him and Kidney have a lot of chemistry. Kidney sets him up and he finishes. But Bathurst has 6 top guys then it drops off, and it showed the other night. They ran out of gas by the third and Saint John with 4 solid lines just drove them into the ground. Lapierre and LaFrance weren't very effective against a big strong Seas Dog team...but a good game to watch for sure.
