I'm curious to know who in the organization picked the Sea Dogs as the team name? Surprised they didn't try to go with Fire, Blaze to tie in when the Flames were around.

It was a public vote among a few finalists (I think 3). There was nothing Flames-related that made it to the public vote (and the franchise was specifically trying to sever ties to the Flames-era because the former Flames owner bid against them for the franchise).

There was a submission process where the winning fan won something. First cut was based on number of times the same name was submitted and Flames was explicitly forbidden for the submission process.

Interesting to know! Shame that the previous ownership wasn't very good. I'd be curious to know what some of the other submissions were that came close.

Sea Dogs and Ice Men were the final two names. The Telegraph Journal, a number of years ago, had the alternate jersey renderings in an article.

Should've pulled a CFL (Roughriders) and had the Saint John Fog Devils and the St. John's Fog Devils in the same league.

I believe that they were allowed because Roughriders and Rough Riders were considered just different enough.

Fog Devils would have been great. There's enough nature and history (not including the fire) to have a creative name that ties well into Saint John. Tide, Rapids, Fog Devils, Shipbuilders, Loyalists, Zeplins(?) for when the Hindenburg flew over once lol Shame most names around Oil had already been taken up.
If they did become the Fog Devils they would need a proper fog horn in the arena. Honestly surprised they don't have either a train horn or fog horn in the arena. Would be more fun than the pre-recorded horn lol

I can remember back when Saint John had a Junior A team named the Alpines in 1995. They were the first Junior A team that I can remember having their own coach style bus and it was painted in the white, blue and red Alpine beer colours.
Moncton went by the Alpines name during their first season before going to Wildcats.
Back in the Nova Scotia Senior League - Windsor used the Schooners name and logo which I thought was really sharp - with a Bluenose outline and Toronto Maple Leafs colour scheme. I'm not a Leafs fan - but they were sharp uniforms in that era.
I realize that teams no longer want to identify with alcohol and there must be things like copyrights and trademarks in place, but the Saint John Schooners would have kind of tied in with that Halifax Mooseheads Maritime feel. JMO.

Yeah I agree with having an identify that feels like it fits with the city and the history. I think of names like the "Cataractes", "Drakkar", "Saguenéens", "Foureurs" and to an extent the "Islanders". All have a more unique, localized name.

So the solution for two of our rivals being named after Saint John beers (though Moncton did change their name to Wildcats which is significantly better) is to name ourselves after a Halifax beer?

Can we name the team the Saint John Oland's and have our logo be a hammer?
