Back to the Euro talk.....
I think there is a rule in place in which we are able to put Brabenec on a special list and draft another Euro in 2022 and this applies here because he is AHL eligible per the NHL CBA. So there's opportunity to draft another Euro and then if it happens that Vegas keeps Brabenec in the AHL (not the best decision, IMO), then we have a Euro ready to go. The catch is that should Brabenec be returned to the QMJHL, then we have to get rid of one import player via trade, waivers, or cut him outright.
Now, I think this rule can only be applied if the player has signed his entry level contract. Vegas has yet to sign Brabenec to his entry level deal. Since he was drafted out of Europe, they actually have until 2025 to sign him to an entry level deal.... but the likely scenario for a player in major junior is that he's signed before his junior eligibility expires.
The rules about import players are not written down anywhere we can find them and they change often, so I could be incorrect.
In fact, one other thing about Euro players is that I think CHL clubs were allowed to retain any of their 2021 selections (many who were not able to travel to North America during the pandemic) and make new selections in 2022. Normally to make a new pick, you would have to drop a previous Euro who hadn't reported.
In 2020 we drafted Jakub Brabenec and Matous Mensik (who they were keen on bringing over).
In 2021 we drafted Oliver Satny and Matvei Michkov (keep dreaming, everyone).
As I understand it, I think we still on the CHL rights to all four players until the end of this season. Then, I expect that upon the 2022 import draft we have to get things down to two players (or two players plus any eligible guys on special lists).
So is Mensik an option that we have as well? As an 18 y/o player he led his U20 team in scoring. If we are in rebuild mode, we probably aren't as interested in an incoming 19 y/o import..... but if he's interested in coming over, he has value as a mature, developed player. Maybe he's a guy to bring in and use for half a season and trade? Options, options.....
