I've coached goalies in minor hockey for 15 yrs (not that that qualifies me or anything LOL) but if I were to offer my armchair critique of Filion's play on these goals and in general I would say this:
1st goal - Can't really fault him here. There are 5 guys watching the puck. He probably could have come out to the shooter a bit more instead of just floating across but that's a quick play and hard save to make. An NHL goalie probably makes that save but this isn't the NHL.
2nd goal - It's kind of a short half-breakaway but to me he's out of position here. He's not square to the shooter at all and he's guessing on the pass. Gave up the whole glove side.
3rd goal - Another terrible defensive play as 3 Cats just blow by the puck and leave the slot open. Also another quick one timer but he over commits and is all out of sorts on the play. The goal is scored from the top of the crease and by the end of it he is spun around almost out of the crease on the other side.
4th goal - You can't expect him to make a save that is tipped in front like that (maybe twice). I find he is maybe a little deep in the net but you can't do much here.
5th goal - He made the first two saves while 5 (FIVE!) Cats stood in the crease area and watch the puck again. He over commits again on the 2nd rebound and that takes him out of the play when he couldn't find it - but you can't really ask for more than that from your goalie on that play.
So in general I think the Cats defensive play is certainly not helping his case. But ELITE goalies find ways to make at least some of those saves and I think because of his draft status people just expect him to be elite but some guys just don't get there. That's the expectation a bit in junior hockey - fair or not.
He is also not a big guy. When you are 6'4" like half the goalies in the NHL now it's easier to get away with being out of position a bit or playing a little more deep in the net. If you don't have the size you gotta be quick and battle and to me Filion is lacking this as well. I don't see him fighting through scrums. Seems like he is guessing instead of reading the play and this leads to over-committing on shots and poor rebound control. He struggles to make the "big" save that elite goalies seem to be able to make.
His lateral movement is not great IMO. Some goalies aren't great laterally but can still be successful with great positioning, SIZE and other fundamentals (Corey Crawford and Mike Smith are examples). He has tools. You don't get to this level without them. I think the cerebral part of the position is what's holding him back from being an elite goalie more than anything. Again I am saying this from my couch and not from a position of knowing the player.
