It appears Moncton picked up Steen from Charlottetown for a 2025 11th rounder
I posted this on the Charlottetown board yesterday.... to try to get to the bottom of this Steen and a pick to Moncton trade for a lower value pick. If any Moncton posters can remember anything from the draft or shed some insight, please do.
The deal is as follows:
To Moncton:
Steen
Moncton's 8th round pick in 2025
To Charlottetown:
Moncton's 11th round pick in 2025
We are returning a pick that originally belonged to Moncton to them. I'm not sure why Steen gets thrown in the deal and we get Moncton's 11th round pick back.
How did we get the Moncton 8th in 2025? At the draft we traded our 2024 7th round selection to Moncton for their 2024 7th round selection and the Moncton 2025 8th round selection. Basically we traded down in the 2024 draft and picked up an extra 8th in 2025, which has now been exchanged to be an 11th in 2025
Now.... I'll add more confusion to the mix. When looking at the 2024 draft, it looks like the Charlottetown 7th in 2024, which belonged to us and we traded to Moncton on the draft floor, eventually was used by Sherbrooke to draft Florent Houle... but there's no record on the QMJHL site of how that pick eventually made it's way to Sherbrooke. The Moncton 7th round pick in 2024, which we'd traded for on the draft floor... it somehow made it's way back to Moncton's hands and they used the selection to choose Loic Nasreddine, but like the Charlottetown 2024 7th, there's no record of the Moncton 2024 7th going back to them.
That's about as much research that I want to do on this.
So, to summarize.....
On paper we dealt down in the draft by shipping our 7th to Moncton for their 7th and a 2024 8th. But Moncton did not actually use the pick.... it was made by Sherbrooke. The pick we were supposed to pick up in the transaction, was actually used by Moncton, the team that traded it to us. Then the extra 2025 8th we were supposed to be picking up is now being shipped back to Moncton, but we do pick up a 2025 11th in the exchange. Moncton also picks up an overage defencemen who is supposed to be hurt and maybe considering not playing hockey this year....but he also would have been released by us and could have been picked up for free by anyone.
Is this clear as mud? I'm not sure why the movement of picks in this league has to be such a zoo.
