Just sucks for the paying fans. You hope to turn a corner and you see this kid picked and you read up on him...then this happens. Was it smart managing? That import draft is impossible to predict and the leagues keep making it harder on small market teams for some reason. The ability to trade that pick directly helps small market teams. Are they trading it to a big market team to pick a guy who they want? Usually, yes. And the argument should also be made that in a draft with all 3 leagues we should want the Halifax's and Quebec's to bring in the best players possible if they can. We give teams compensation picks if their domestic 1sts and 2nds don't report...why nothing for these? Toss a team a 3rd or 4th round midget pick if they get the short end of these recruitment wars. It's the paying fans in the small market who feel slighted yet again. With the league still thinking hurting both the smaller and the bigger markets is the way to solve it. At least when you could trade the picks, you got some type of compensation for the fact your team couldn’t get good players to report. Maybe the high end teams got all the good players but you didn’t leave completely empty handed either. As a fan, I’m really not sure what sucks more though. Picking a kid high in the draft who never reports or taking a kid high who isn’t really that talented, just because he’ll report to your team. It’s not the best example but if we go back 10 years, would you rather draft Adam Veliky or roll the dice on Dmitri Jaskin who may never report to your team? It’s sort of the situation teams are in right now and ultimately the best teams still get their guys, the only difference is that these teams that aren’t desirable don’t have anyway of getting compensation for the fact their teams suck. At this point you may as well just scrap the whole charade of the draft and let teams recruit and sign whatever imports they want because it’s basically the same as what’s happening now.

The only "draft" aspect of the smaller markets fighting over the kids certain agents want to come over for exposure...some of those are also for attitude reasons you don't know about until it's too late. I didn't mind the Kulich pick. While I thought the Nemec one was a waste of time. Even as a fan without agent connections it was obvious one of those 2 may have ended up with the Q being a decent option while for the other it was never going to be an option. The Russian aspect doesn't help any of this.

A year ago the Isles selected Matvei Michkov.....which they knew wouldn't report....but with the hopes that when NHL drafted that he MAY report....
They moved on and selected a top 17yr old fw this year with NHL Draft expectations....and a " unknown" netminder from Latvia.
Sometimes you take a flyer on a player....and once in a while it pans out.
The Isles selected Butler last year's draft....despite he was all about the NCAA....but they got him to commit to the Isles and will be in their lineup as a 17yr old this season...
With any draft, you just don't know.....ESPECIALLY with the Euro draft.

Looking for some clarity on the CHL import draft rules. Just wondering how long Gatineau can keep four imports on their training camp roster, while other teams appear to make room (Samenas by the Titan) before drafting their two new imports? With six Q teams currently showing 3 or more imports on their training camp rosters, it's obviously allowed, but is there a set date that the third or fourth import must be moved? 20 year olds and NHL first round picks don't count in the off season.

So teams don’t have to move or release them to pick new players in the import draft. Same reason Moncton can currently have 3 on their roster currently.

But once the season starts they have to make a decision on two Euros.

wonder who the Titan will end up with now that they have an open slot and some teams have additional guys.
