And it's been announced by the team.. Now THAT’S surprising - in some ways not, but the timing for sure. IMO this was overdue, but the timing is bizarre. With all due respect to Stella... it was time for a fresh voice to captain the ship. But yea... why 5 games into the season?

He has been a GM who tried to run the team from Montreal, he should never have been GM. Watch and you will see how much the better the team will be under Crickard. The players love him I doubt being away makes a difference. A GM mostly selects new players or send them down or negotiate trades. That can be done from anywhere. He does not need to be close to players like a coach does. So I assume some communication issues between the coach and Stella. Now Crickard won't need to consult anyone for upcoming selections or trade decisions. Allot of teams in the Q work with coach/gm combos.

I'll never let him live down "We're drafting for character" and then having 0 players that he could trust to wear the "C" so they had to trade for one.
Like, what's your definition of "Character"?
Tho granted, Lawrence was a great kid so idk what was going on there. He managed to create like the leagues most toxic dressing room it seems. Way to fail at the one thing you said you were going to do.

He used the "character" trait to justify drafting Carruthers over Savoie, who is arguably the worst pick in the past decade. Not only did he not develop (he has less career QMJHL points than 3 16 year-olds put up last year as rookies), but he demanded a trade after 1 year. Of the 02-04 group, Stairs, Drover, Roy and Carruthers all requested trades. I also don't really want to dump on the guy. He did build some great teams, and I'm sure it's not easy actually having to build a group of personalities of 16 year old kids to mesh together. I just evaluate players on talent, I don't know what they're like behind the scenes. That can't be easy

Honestly, we are 5 games into the season. Depending on how the team does, I could see this team not selling at Christmas. If they could win some playoff games while using 16s and 17s in key situations, that would be really good for their development. Your on to something. This team is going to surprise the league, if they haven't already! Who knows, time to start believing there is no need to wait to show up for a league championship! Good Coaching, good chemistry, good TEAM leads to magical things ! Not at this level it doesn't. Please try and win with a pile of 16/17yr olds of which none are generational. You're just doing everyone else a favor. There's a reason the method is to build for when a core is 18/19/20. Kids don't win at this level.

How can a GM decide what personalities fit if they're not around the players every day. If your GM is going to live out of province your head coach might as well be the GM as he's the one going to be influencing the out of town GM anyway.

Citris what is your view on the current team? Were these all bad picks/trades/move up?

They also control the room by controlling the fate of each player. Coach might not play you. GM can send you elsewhere if he doesn't like what he sees/hears. He sees and hears very little if he's not with the team on a regular basis.

But, he does select which players are in that dressing room and the coaching staff, so I don't understand what your point is. He doesn't select the captain, but he did select the coach who didn't think any of the players he also selected were worthy of wearing the C. Not a single one. That is a failure of the GM at the end of the day, I'm sorry. As for the rest of his moves, of course he made good moves. Every gm makes good moves and bad. But you're in year 1 of a rebuild after, what? 3 years after winning the memorial Cup? Sorry, that's just not doing a good job.

They traded way too much and still completely bombed in the playoffs that year and had to hire a new coach to get things right...just for that 1 week. I just can't align with defending that the GM doesn't need to be around the team. You have 20 teenagers and don't think the guy responsible for trading/building with them needs to be close to them. Has that ever really worked well at this level?

At the end of the day, I wish that the boys have fun at playing hockey! Surely having someone as a coach and GM simplifies things: less arguing

I agree with those saying that they aren't surprised by the move itself but are surprised by the timing.
Any chance it has anything to do with the players rumored to be joining/re-joining the team this weekend and his handling of either of those situations?

Just last weekend, Stella talked about having 3 1sts to build with. I dont think that anyone that watched the last 3 games would think that this is a bottom dweller, meaning that we should be in the 4-6 range for the division without selling (and should only sell if someone over offers). Stella thanked the players and scouts, but not Georgie and Crickard, so I believe that the tension comes from one guy wanting to tank for more high picks and one guy wanting to play meaningful hockey.

I'll take meaningful hockey. As evidenced by the crowds, the fans don't want to see another 2-3 years of bottom dwellers. Minus a few months in 2022, there has been nothing meaningful since 2017. I think there is a very good core right now to build around and you have the draft picks to add more, although not necessarily adding 3 more 16 year olds through a draft.

It's time to play meaningful hockey. You can only tank to load up on 1-2 years so much. It's one thing to draft a bunch of high-value prospects. It's another thing to develop them by teaching them how to win and giving them a chance to play in a meaningful playoff series or two. We've sold enough since the last championship season and have enough in the bank. Unless ridiculously generous offers are made, I think it's time to move forward with what we have. Re-evaluate in 2 years when Robinson is 20 and the 2007 group are 19. We should have a good core of 17 and 18 year olds at that time and may want to consider selling to some extent for assets that could help for the following year or 2.
