The Saint John Sea Dogs begin their 20th season at home with weekend games against the Moncton Wildcats and the Halifax Mooseheads. Well my 19th home opener - missed the 20th one with work.
The Sea Dogs will be without Eriks Mateiko (Washington Capitals), Matteo Mann (Philadelphia Flyers) and Tyler Peddle (Columbus Blue Jackets) as they have all earned invites to main camps. The Wildcats will be missing more as they are one of the top teams (Ranked #4 initial CHL Rankings) to watch this season under new head coach Gardiner McDougall.
Good promo to get people to the game - $20 for tickets to both games.
Go Sea Dogs Go!!

I expect Gravel to start tonight and Robinson to start tomorrow.
5-2 Wildcats tonight. Gravel will get a star because he'll be the only reason it won't be a blowout. And yes I'm aware Moncton are missing some key guys. This will likely be the closest game of the season between the two teams.
Tomorrow should be a different story with the Sea Dogs getting their first win of the season. One of the rookies will probably get his first Q goal.

I was unable to make the game last night but it looks like it was a close game until late. How did the guys look? Team played well... showed what hard work can do up against a top team in the country. Gravel held them in there with key saves. Team had a bad line change and took their foot off the gas in the last 5 min. Otherwise.. the game would have went down to the wire and any Team could have won. Shots were pretty much even but moncton had more dangerous shots. Work in progress for the dogs but strong work effort for the first game... build off that. If we can keep teams down to 30 shots.. they can all be winnable games if the goaltending is on. And build our offense which had glimpses of positive chances. Boys were hard on the puck... great game.

I don't think goaltending will be a problem this season but it looks like scoring goals might be. So far in 2 games (pre-season and regular season) the Sea Dogs have yet to score a goal at TD Station. They can create chances but can't score. I don't recall the other goalies making any exceptional saves either.

New season, same camera operator? When will the Sea Dogs find someone who can keep up with the puck?

It will definitely improve with those guys, especially if Beveridge rejoins the team but they'll need help. I also expect our younger guys to improve in that department as the season goes along. How much they'll improve remains to be seen. Nice to see Groulx contributing offensively. We need more of that from him.

I was at both games ... thanks to two for one game tickets..and he stood out of the crowd for sure. Also Lominacs play was a pleasant surprise. He was hard on pucks as well. But in the end indidual play is just that. All players got to step up to win puck battles and to win games they have to go full.. not half. It was good games.. but each player I think has to ask themselves if they think they are playing up to par for the Q. Or do they have more. Ps.. Beverage will not be back.. btw

Maybe Zach Morin's family and agent won't want him being around prostitution, so they ship him off to Saint John
