When the Acadie-Bathurst Titan hit the ice to open the 2007-08 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season next month, defenceman Brad Tesink will be watching from the stands.
The 18-year-old Saint John native is nursing a broken wrist that could keep him out of the lineup until Thanksgiving weekend.
"I broke a bone during the playoffs last year," he said. "Over the course of the summer, it wasn't in a cast so it didn't really heal. Now I'm paying for it."
Tesink was fitted for a cast earlier this week and was staying in shape by running stairs at the K. C. Irving Regional Centre Tuesday while his teammates were on the ice practising.
"I guess I'll be in a cast for six weeks," he said. "I'm frustrated but I'm trying to use it as a positive. I've got another six weeks to get in the best shape I can when I get back on the ice."
After taking part in an exhibition game last Friday in Lewiston, Me., Tesink decided to get the wrist examined.
"It's kind of been bothering me over the summer, but I thought it was just healing as I did my training," he said. "I guess it never really healed, it was broken all summer.
"A couple of days ago I went and got some x-rays done just to check," he added. "I just wasn't sure and they said it definitely was broken.
"They want to keep it in a cast and stabilize it for about four weeks. After that I'll get some more x-rays to check it out. They think it is going to be about six weeks before the cast comes off."
Tesink was acquired in a trade with the Gatineau Olympiques last January. In 23 games with the Titan, he picked up a pair of assists, giving him a season total of three goals and nine helpers in 64 games. In two pre-season contests this month, he picked up eight penalty minutes and was a plus three despite failing to register a point.
"I felt good," he said. "The only thing was that anything physical, like trying to push guys off, something just didn't feel right."
Acadie-Bathurst has just two wins in six exhibition games. The Titan are at home to the Rimouski Oceanic Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Irving Centre before wrapping up the pre-season with a home-and-home series with the Saint John Sea Dogs Sept. 7 and 9. They open the regular season Sept. 14 at home to the Moncton Wildcats.
Including Tesink, the Titan are down to just 25 players after Mathieu Jean-Bouliane was cut Tuesday. The 16-year-old has been reassigned to his midget AAA team in Trois-Rivieres, Que. Other than Tesink, the New Brunswick natives still in camp include Fredericton's Jordan Clendenning and Cameron Critchlow, St. Quentin's Mathieu Labrie, Bas-Caraquet's Remi Blanchard and Dalhousie's Cory Smearer.
