I'm surprised at Magnan, given that even wildcat fans called him one dimensional and soft... maybe he has a leadership attitude this year being in his second year. He can't be that one dimensional, he was used in a defensive role in the OHL. and yet he was waived thru that entire league suggesting whatever role he was used in at the OHL level wasn't working out so well

He can't be that one dimensional, he was used in a defensive role in the OHL. Just repeating whats been said by wildcat fans for quite a while... didnt really notice him much in the playoff series last year. ``I've only been here a short time, but I've watched closely and talked to the staff from last season,'' said Wildcats head coach Danny Flynn. ``As a 20-year-old, he brings a good level of maturity. He's a very team oriented guy.
``He's not going to be a yeller and screamer a lot of the time, but I think when he stands up in the room he'll have the ear of his teammates. The thing that strikes me about him is his maturity and his commitment to team success.''
...
Mangan, a centre, was Moncton's fourth leading scorer last season with 25 goals and 57 points in 51 games.
``Phil has been around junior hockey since he was 16 and he understands how it works,'' said Flynn. ``He spent time in the Ontario Hockey League and the Ontario junior A ranks before coming to Moncton last season.''Excerpt from the T & T - explaining why they feel he is a good fit as captain.

I don't really consider this to be a great choice from an outside of the dressing room view ... maybe he is. My view of Mangan is a kid that is a smart hockey player with good offensive skills ... but I wouldn't call him a leader ... but maybe he is . He certainly isn't a guy that leads by example though ... he is not the hardest working player on the team ... not even close ... and I really don't see him having any assets that can spark his team when they need a spark. He isn't going to dish out any big hits ... he isn't going to drop the gloves ... he's not terribly dangerous with the puck unless its inside the faceoff dots ... not going to make any end to end rushes ... doesn't have any breakaway speed ... and doesn't often bring the crowd to their feet. The other options were ... Marquardt ... yeah right ... did he show up for the playoffs ? Marquardt is one of those guys you tolerate because he can score and when he decides to can be very dominating ... he just doesn't decide to do that very often. Lincourt ... not a team player at all ... may not make the team Morehouse ... definately a leader but alot of negatives go along with his positives ... although he is a guy that can go out and spark his team on a shift when it is needed. Eagles ... similar to Mangan but probably a stronger work ethic ... I'd actually take him before Mangan. MacLelland ... doesn't really have the ability to spark his team ... good guy to wear an A though ... could be a leading candidate to wear the C next year ... depends on this years progression. Anybody else is still too young and not ready to be a leader .. maybe I'm forgetting somebody. Sill is a first year player ... has not earned a letter yet. So ... if I was picking my captains ... I'd put the C on Morehouse (1st choice) or Eagles ... and A's on Morehouse or Eagles, Maclelland ... and I'd put an A on Mangan to start and rotate it between him and Marquardt (if he is back) and make them earn it. I've just never seen anything from Mangan that makes me feel he'd be a good captain ... hopefully he'll surprise me.

You said he wasn't one dimensional because he played a defensive role in the OHL (i have no idea if this is accurate and i suspect you don't either ) and I said the fact he was waived thru that league might lead one to suggest he wasn't particularly effective at that role (if it was indeed the role he was given)

He's there to be a 1st line center, not a checking line center. If they used him in that role he had to have some aptitude at it. He said it in the paper that this was his role in the OHL.

I surprised Brown and/or Macausland didn't have it in their "agreements" that they be named captain
