I have often seen praise on this site about how we drafted Brown and Macausland. How in the past we got good talent in late rounds (Gaudet, Adam, Demers for example (still unsure if we should have Dimitruk in there)).
How about Goyens and Lincourt?
We gave a total of a 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th round picks for these two players who played half a season each for us. Our scouting on these players was definitely not the best, and it cost us a lot.
You win some and you lose some I guess.

Goyens and Lincourt are QMJHL Players...but your GM overpaid for them...simple as that.
Moncton's scouting staff is quite good, they have good people on the staff and even have an NHL scout as an advisor.
The deals for Lincourt and Goyens were severe over payments by your GM...not bad info from your scouts.

I find the scouting has been above average but not spectacular over the last few years. And I'm talking specifically about the draft, not the free agent signings. It seems the cats are always short on draft picks because of all the trades they've made. All the free agent signings and trades kinda overshadow the drafted players too. They certainly did good in 2006 getting both Camreron and Pianosi in the third and fifth rounds. 2005 was a good year with Labelle, Lessard and Riopel. However, you can't really give the scouting any credit for drafting MacAusland and Brown, they were pretty much no brainers if they thought they could convince them to play which is not the scouts job. That's just Irving's wallet making the scouting staff look good. And drafting all those Americans in the late rounds is also pretty simple when they're still available. Next year's core should be made up of a good part of drafted players which is a change cause it seems the good players of the last two years weren't drafted by the cats (Dupuis, Yandle, MacDonald, Goulet, Marquardt, Welton). It seems it's been a while since the cats really drafted and developed a superstar, basically none since Bernier. Marchand was traded after his 17 yr old season and Samson isn't a superstar but was traded just as he broke out offensively. With Kyle Woodlief now scouting the US, and the recent successes with free agents, it probably takes some pressure off the staff at the draft, but it's still nice to stock up on prospects that won't have to go through waivers and all that just to come over. Even though it's too much to ask for, it would be nice to have another draft like the one they drafted Bernier, Crawford, Saunders, Graham, Salvis, Glode, etc.
