If the Flyers hadn't intended on keeping him in the NHL this year anyway, but intend on including him there in their future, could they keep him on their roster this year for 9 games and then send him down to the AHL or ECHL, in effect reducing his suspension from 20 to 11 games without it taking a year from his NHL contract? What was his chances for making the team this year anyway? They are not that deep, he would have played in the NHL at some point.

it was a borderline hit......he left his feet AFTER the hit, not before......and the hit was only about a second after he passed the puck off........IMO, he was suspended because of the injury and not the hit.........if the hit had happened at center ice, he'd have probably gotten the 5 minute penalty and 2 games or something.......I don't think it should have been more than 5 at the very most.

Have to agree with you here Chops .............the penalty does not fit the crime.

I agree ... we see that same hit about once every 5 games ... and often no penalty is called ... or they'll call it charging ... but the guy always gets up. We saw it in pre-season vs SJ when Brannon drilled a Seadog coming out from behind the net ... Bourdon's hit on Latal last year. Its the injury that is causing the suspension. IMO it should be 2 games at the most. A 20 game suspension to be served only in the NHL essentially limits Downie's chances of playing in the NHL. Think about it ... they bring him up to sit in the press-box for 20 games ... adding to their payroll ... paying Downie alot more than he makes in the AHL just to sit and watch. Downies will have to be exceptionally better than other minor league prospects to get brought up. I could see Downie getting called up if he suffers an injury in the minors ... might as well sit him in the pressbox in the NHL ... but you still have to pay him ay NHL rates ... adding to your payroll.

Can they call him up a few different times, or does he have to pass waivers after so many or something?............if his AHL team was playing a couple games against a "lesser" opponent, it might be a good time to have him out of the lineup and call him up to knock a couple games off the suspension.

They probably can, but I'm sure the NHL would say something if they call him up 20 times when the Phantoms have off days, sort of defeats the purpose of a suspension.

Not much the NHL could say about it.......when you suspend a guy who hasn't even made the league yet, I'm sure Philly will find a way around it......probably not 20 callups, but they could bring him up for 3 or 4 games when the Phantoms have some downtime.

There is a lot the league can say, there is no way in hell the NHL will allow Downey to play all year AHL and serve that suspension on off days or only miss 4-5 AHL games.

The paper (Daily news) said that he will have to serve them wherever he plays (AHL or NHL) Thats not what the NHL said ... its to be served in the NHL. The AHL may still suspend him for 20 games (I haven't heard that they will) , but he'll still have to sit out 20 NHL games.

The paper (Daily news) said that he will have to serve them wherever he plays (AHL or NHL) AHL commisioner will have to decide if he will accept the suspension, modify it, or scrap it while the NHl will stay the same. Daily News should do their homework.

When I look at this hit, and compare it to that hit Hunter threw on Turgeon after that GWG in the playoffs, I can't help but think Downie got screwed in comparison.
But the league seems serious about getting those blows to the head out of the game. If they use this as a standard setter, and apply the punishment to everyone regardless of whether or not they are a superstar type player, I'm all for it. No favoritism please.
