Why are they bringing Tolles back? I thought he did alright while he was here--but they sent him packing for a reason, right? ....and isn't he a 19 year old? They may be starting to gear up for the players they will lose to the World Juniors/U18 tournaments as well as trades. Just a thought, as I have no idea who, if anyone, would be going to either tournament. Barberio to the U18 perhaps? Baca or Bezak to the WJHC? There is no U18 this time of year, only in April and August. There is an U17 tournament(Canada Games every 4 years) that Brown and McAusland will surely play in. www.hockeycanada.ca/1/8/6/3/3/index1.shtmlwww.hockeynl.ca/news_events/view.php?id=93

I didn't like watching Eastman at first...but he's grown on me--Gomes....who takes a wrist shot from the point?! I don't think he KNOWS how to take a slap shot
--WOW it's some easy playing/commenting from the comfort of my plastic coliseum seat!!

Eastman stays for sure....on some nights he is our best defenseman. That being said, I don't see him back next season, so I wouldn't cry if he was traded. I just don't see him being cut or having his playing time reduced.

A wrist shot that makes in on net and generates a juicy rebound is much more productive than a slapshot that misses by a mile.

We've definitely gotten away more shots lately, especially on the PP. I think this team is due to break out a little on the scoreboard....and when you lose a lot of one goal games, it doesn't take much to turn those losses into wins.

Allright, so Tolles is coming back. I don't disagree with the decision, but one thing is obvious: he isn't coming back to ride the bench.
Which means, who does the team cut or release to make room for him, and who gets out of the usual 6 to give Tolles some playing time?
I think Eastman and Barberio have both made a case as to why they should stay. Barberio has elevated his game a little lately, while Eastman has been consistent and better then expect for pretty much the whole season. I think these two are the only ones that we can surely affirm that they wont be budging from where they are.
As for who gets cut, considering we're bringing in a 19YO that wont (or shouldn't) be part of the team as an overager, I'm considering the same type of player will be cut. Only two others can be considered as such, Herr and Gomes. I think here the choice is quite obvious. Herr is only here for one thing: toughness. The team doesn't use it, so I would be very much surprised to see him remain in Moncton.
So to go back to the 6 defensemen, we have: -Barberio -Eastman -Tolles
Who gets the #4-6 slots? It's a "race" between Baca, Boyle, Wilson, Pianosi and Gomes.
I think Pianosi should get the nod for most of the games. He has simplified his game tremendously lately and even though he isn't producing offensively, his mistakes have gone way done and I don't consider him as much of a liability anymore. Add to that that he is only 18 and has potential to explode offensively someday, his spot should be secure.
Now if it was up to me, the two others would be Baca and Wilson, but I do not think that will be the case.
Considering how the players have been used so far, I think we will see Boyle and Gomes used as the two last defensemen. Gomes has played almost all the games, while Boyle has not been off the ice lately. Baca has often been a seemingly easy scratch for Flynn, while Wilson has barely touched the ice compared to the others (except Herr).
So I expect something like this: -Barberio -Eastman -Tolles -Gomes -Pianosi -Boyle
Anyone else feel we have a defense heavy on average at best (or a little better then for Eastman) 19 year olds? With Herr it was acceptable, as he barely played, but with Tolles now....

So on a year that we are probably going to have to fight for a playoff spot we decide we need 3 19 yo D men? Boyle has been decent for the most part. Got caught a couple of times flat footed but that should get better as he missed all of last years developement. Tolles played ok in trainning camp but obviously not well enough to earn a spot. So why bring him back now. I liked him from what I saw last season but he didn't seem to do much in trainning camp IMO. Gomes has his moments out there. Starting to play the body but still likes to shoot for shin pads from the point . Wilson, Boyle and Baca are all 18. I would rather give them the icetime as they could still be here next season as well. I would like to see Barberio Eastman Tolles (not sure what to think, but as Bobo said he isn't being brought back to ride the pine.) Pianosi Baca Wilson Boyle I am sure we are going to keep 7 D men so that leaves Herr and Gomes out.

Pianosi Baca Wilson Boyle I am sure we are going to keep 7 D men so that leaves Herr and Gomes out. I don't see Gomes going anywhere ,,, he gets regular icetime ... and he clearly outplayed Tolles in training camp so I'm not sure why they think Tolles would be better now. Gomes isn't perfect but he also is getting better as he adapts to the speed of the Q and as he gets in better shape. Personally I don't think this move makes us better in any way ... especially if we are deleting Gomes for Tolles. It may be that Herr and Wilson have experessed displeasure in not playing and will go home at Xmas if it doesn't change ... I don't blame them. And Tolles will be brought in as an extra body ... but as has been said ... I can't see him being interested in returning unless he has a guarantee that he is a regular. I have a feeling you are going to see Baca traded at Xmas ... to Bathurst who have Euro space and need a capable Dman or two ... just a hunch not based on any rumours. I'd rather see them bring up a kid like Firlotte ... 17 YO. He looked just as good as Wilson and Boyle in training camp and he is only 17 ... and I liked the fact that he was the only one with balls enough to stand up to Herr. He has very good size and I think he could be developed into a serviceable Dman given time. He should have been added when 17 YO Demitruk pulled out. We have too many Dmen that will not be here next year. I know they are a stop gap solution only ... but we are going to face a similar problem next year when Gomes, Eastman, Tolles, Herr, and probably Baca are gone and we have 4 or 5 new openings on D. Wilson and Boyle need to play regularly to ready to take on a fulltime role with bigger responsibility next year ... but that doesn't excite me either. I can't really see any of our 19 YO Dman being kept as a 20 ... none of them are better than Emanuele and he didn't make the cut. I'd almost consider trying to get him back this year and move away from Morehouse. 20 YO options next year would be .... Eastman, Gomes, Herr, Tolles, Lavigne, MacLelland, Eagles, Sill ... with the last 3 names being the obvious choices. Trades could change that ... but as it stands now this is what I see.
