No fun for goalie Mayer
By JASON HILLS -- Sun Media
It probably wasn't the kind of game Robert Mayer envisioned in front of so many National Hockey League scouts.
The Swiss born goaltender who plays for the Saint John Sea Dogs got the start in goal for Team Red in the Home Hardware Top Prospects game and was shelled for five goals on 15 shots through a period and a half of work.
"I didn't have the best game, but I am happy I was able to go through this whole experience. Down the road it will help me a lot," said Mayer after the game.
Luke Schenn, Jared Staal, Jamie Arniel and Josh Bailey all scored in the first period. Zach Bogosian added to the offensive explosion by Team White with a power play marker in the second.
Tri-City Americans goaltender Chet Pickard took over for Mayer right after the fifth goal.
Mayer really couldn't be faulted on any of the goals.
Schenn's shot was a hard snapshot with lots of traffic in front of the net, Staal's was the cause of some sloppy defensive play in front and Arniel's was on a short-handed breakaway.
Maybe the only goal he would have liked to have back was the juicy rebound he gave up on the Bailey goal, but Zach Boychuk's move to set it up was made by burning two defencemen.
Mayer originally didn't get the invite to the showcase game but was a last minute injury replacement for Victoriaville Tigers goaltender Kevin Poulin.
"I knew I was going to be facing a lot of tough shots and I just tried to have fun and do the best I could and it didn't turn out so well for me, but I have the whole next half of the season to try and get better," said Mayer.
