SAINT JOHN - It's the time of year for New Year's resolutions and the Saint John Sea Dogs are no exception.
Several players have come up with their goals for the New Year, and some are willing to share while others are not. First off, the Sea Dogs head coach and general manager Jacques Beaulieu wants to keep a good thing going.
"I don't really have one," he said. "Just keep things going right."
While not the most exciting resolution, it's tough to argue with the logic as the Sea Dogs sit in first place in the Eastern Division of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and three points out of first overall. Sea Dogs defenceman Yann Sauve is in his draft year and was recently featured on a TSN.ca list of the top 20 prospect for the 2008 NHL entry draft. However, Sauve insists he's not thinking about the draft.
"My resolution is to make the playoffs and go as far as we can," the 17-year-old said. "I just want to play well and do whatever I can to help the team make a deep run."
The Sea Dogs organization may want players to make a collective resolution to stop breaking sticks at a record pace. The team has already surpassed last season's total of broken sticks and the main culprit is 18-year-old blue-liner David Stich. The Czech Republic born player has broken somewhere in the neighbourhood of 30 sticks. An expensive habit, but if the team continues to win, then the Sea Dogs brass probably won't mind shelling out for some more.
As for third-year forward Ryan Sparling, his resolution is a simple one - stay healthy. The Sydney, N.S., product has been sidelined for 12 games this season due to two shoulder injuries. However, when he's been in the lineup he's been great. In 26 games, Sparling has racked up 16 goals and 26 assists for 42 points.
"Personally I think I played well in the first half, but injuries kept me from playing all the games," the 19-year-old said. Since returning to the lineup after the holiday break, Sparling and forward Alexandre Picard, who missed time with a knee injury, have combined for 18 points in three games.
As for a final resolution, Saint John captain Alex Grant keeps it short and sweet. "Just win," Grant said.
