SEA DOGS DEFEAT FOG DEVILS 4-1 Travis Fullerton Makes 38 Saves To Lead Saint John To Victory in St. John’s
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, January 3, 2008
ST. JOHN’S, NF --- The Saint John Sea Dogs kicked off a three-game series versus the St. John’s Fog Devils with a hard-fought win on Thursday night, besting their expansion cousins by a score of 4-1 in south eastern Newfoundland.
Both squads entered tonight’s action red hot, with each team having won their opening three matches of the second half of the season. The fire versus fire showdown did not disappoint, as a highly competitive match was staged at the Fog Devils’ home venue, with the Sea Dogs ultimately prevailing on the strength of a dominating performance from veteran goalie Travis Fullerton, who earned First Star of the Game honours after stopping 38 of the 39 shots sent his way.
In a high-octane exhibition of unbridled grit, both teams left nothing on the ice Thursday night, battling hard for a full sixty minutes as countless body checks, scoring chances, stellar plays, and superb saves took place at Mile One Stadium in what proved to be an incredibly entertaining hockey game between the two East Division rivals.
After skating to a 1-1 after forty combative minutes, the Sea Dogs were able to gain their first lead of the night with 3:50 remaining in regulation when Scott Howes notched his 24th tally of the season on an odd-man rush. Saint John was then able to add a pair of late goals to take the match by a final score of 4-1.
Alexandre Picard-Hooper, the reigning QMJHL Offensive Player of the Week, scored for Saint John on Thursday, as did Scott Howes, Keven Charland, and Alexandre Leduc. Luke Adam produced the lone marker for St. John’s on the evening.
Both starting net minders, Travis Fullerton and Timo Pielmeier, played exceptionally well for their respective squads between the pipes in Thursday’s exhilerating battle, as the Fog Devils and Sea Dogs combined for 75 shots on goal on the evening. Fullerton ultimately proved victorious in the goaltending duel however, improving his personal record to 16-7 on the season as a result. Meanwhile, Pielmeier (now 14-16) made 32 saves on 35 shots for St. John’s in a losing effort.
After a back-and-forth opening dozen minutes produced little in the way of quantitative offence, Scott Howes appeared to give Saint John a 1-0 lead with 7:31 remaining in the first period when he slid the puck past Pielmeier on a semi-breakaway despite being hauled down by Maxime Dubuc on the play deep in Fog Devils territory. The goal was disallowed following a brief review however, and the score resultantly remained knotted at zeroes.
Some impressive work by both goalies late in the opening frame ensured that the score would remain 0-0 as Thursday’s match reached the twenty minute mark. Travis Fullerton made a spectacular post-to-post toe stop which robbed Phil Mangan of a tap-in goal during a 5-on-3 power play for the home team, and then, a moment later, Timo Pielmeier stoned Chris DiDomenico with an exceptional pad save on a close-range one-timer, denying the QMJHL’s leading scorer his 30th tally of the season in highlight-reel fashion.
The scoreless tie was brought to an abrupt end by Fog Devils centre Luke Adam, who took a pass from Wesley Welcher near the Saint John blue line and proceeded to beat Fullerton with a low forehand shot after splitting the Sea Dogs defence to earn his 19th goal of 2007-08 at the 1:42 mark of period number two.
The visiting squad from Port City proceeded to apply extreme pressure upon Pielmeier and the Fog Devils’ defence, reeling off several scoring chances in a row, none of which were able to result in the tying goal however.
Another big toe save by Fullerton, this time off of a Luke Adam backhand shot from just outside the Sea Dogs crease, took place near the midway mark of the middle frame, as momentum shifted for the umpteenth time.
On their first (and ultimately only) power play chance of the night, Saint John took full advantage, with Alexandre Picard-Hooper rifling a quick snap shot to the back of the St. John’s net after taking a pass from Scott Howes on Pielmeier’s short-side. The 20-year old centre now has 11 goals on the season, five of which have come in his past four matches.
Picard-Hooper’s game-tying PPG, scored at 37:02 mark of the game, proved to be the final tally of the second period, as the forty minute mark was reached the score deadlocked at one apiece.
Regulation’s final frame saw a continuation of the compelling end-to-end action which defined the opening two periods, as each team registered strong early scoring chances in their pursuit of gaining the go-ahead goal. Both goaltenders continued to confound their opposing shooters however, and the match passed its fifty minute mark with neither team possessing an advantage on the scoreboard.
Shortly after Jean-Simon rang a wrist shot off of the Sea Dogs’ goal post, Scott Howes very nearly gave Saint John their first lead of the night, out-manoeuvring a pair of Fog Devils defenders deep in the home team’s zone prior to getting off a solid wrist shot that an out-of-position Pielmeier somehow managed to get a pad on with seven minutes remaining in regulation.
St. John’s then went on their fifth power play of the night shortly after Howes’ near-goal, but the Sea Dogs continued their special teams domination of the Fog Devils, thwarting the home team’s man-up opportunity in dynamic fashion.
Shortly after their successful PK, the Sea Dogs went up 2-1 when Howes finished off a three-on-one rush with a rocket of a wrist shot which beat Pielmeier low and earned the Upper Canadian winger his 24th goal of the season with less than four minutes remaining in the third period.
A frantic scramble took place in front of the Saint John net shortly after Howes’ go-ahead goal, with Fullerton coming up big yet again for the Sea Dogs, keeping the puck from breaching the goal line as St. John’s desperately sought to produce the equalizer.
After an empty net marker off the stick of Keven Charland made the score 3-1 in favour of the visitors, Chris DiDomenico set Alexandre Leduc up for his 12th tally of the season in the final minute of play, resulting in the Sea Dogs’ victory ultimately being by a sum of three goals.
These teams will meet again on Saturday evening and again on Sunday afternoon. Both matches will take place in St. John’s.

Highway Robbery QMJHL Saint John rides outstanding performance from their goaltender to down St. John's 4-1
Andrew McGilligan Telegraph-Journal Published Friday January 4th, 2008 Appeared on page B8
ST. JOHN'S, NL - Travis Fullerton stole two points for the Saint John Sea Dogs with a 38-save performance in a 4-1 win over the St. John's Fog Devils on Thursday.
Alexandre Picard, Scott Howes, Keven Charland and Alexandre Leduc had one goal apiece for the Sea Dogs while Luke Adam had the lone Fog Devils marker.
"I just wanted to have a good start and get the team off on the right foot with two games to go here," Fullerton said.
Saint John head coach and general manager Jacques Beaulieu said it's not the first time Fullerton has stolen a win for the team.
"He was outstanding, Beaulieu said. "That's what you need from an overage goaltender. He's got to come up big sometimes."
The first belonged to the goalies with 27 saves between them to keep the game scoreless through one.
The Sea Dogs looked a little sluggish in the opening stages and didn't generate a shot for the first three minutes.
When they did it, was Brett Gallant taking a pass alone in front, but unable to beat Fog Devils starter Timo Pielmeier.
Fullerton was kept busy in the opening minutes as St. John's buzzed all around the Sea Dogs goal.
After the first few shifts, the action was fast and frantic as the play opened up and both teams pressed for the opening marker. The physical play also picked up around the midway mark as the Fog Devils Matt Boland crunched Saint John defenceman Scott McDonald into the boards. Gallant didn't like that and dropped the gloves with Boland.
The Sea Dogs appeared to take the lead at 12:29 of the first. Howes was hauled down on a partial breakaway and as the players crashed into the goal the puck went in with them. The goal was reviewed and denied by the referee and no penalty shot was awarded either.
Late in the opening period, the Fog Devils had a flurry of chances with a five-on-three power play but Fullerton was spectacular stopping several point blank chances. The Fog Devils appeared to score late in the second penalty, but had the marker called off.
The Fog Devils broke the tie at 1:42 of the second. Adam split the Sea Dogs defence and fired a backhand past Fullerton for a 1-0 St. John's lead.
The Fog Devils dominated play through the second and if not for Fullerton, the Sea Dogs would have been in a bigger hole.
Saint John rewarded their goaltender by tying the game at 17:02 on the power play. Howes sent a pass in front that Picard one-timed to the top corner over the glove of Pielmeier.
The teams entered the third tied 1-1 and Fullerton continued to keep Saint John in the game with several huge saves and some help from the post.
The Dogs took the lead at 16:10 of the third on a great individual effort from Howes. The Toronto native chipped the puck past a Fog Devils defenceman for a three-on-one break. Howes kept the puck and made a nice toe drag to cut in front and wrist one home for a 2-1 lead.
"I think the whole team came awake in the third," Howes said. "(Fullerton) won us the game"¦if he wasn't in net tonight, I don't think we would've won because we broke down defensively quite a bit."
Saint John iced the win with a pair of goals in the final minute. First, Charland connected into an empty net and then Leduc finished off a nifty give and go play for a 4-1 Saint John lead.
Saint John improves to 26-10-1-2 with the win while the loss drops St. John's to 18-20-1-3. The teams square off again on Saturday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
In Moncton, the Wildcats scored three times in the third for a 5-4 decision over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Pierre-Marc Lessard, Matthew Brenton, Scott Brannon, Chris Morehouse and Matt Eagles scored for Moncton (16-20-2-4) while Jordan Clendenning netted all the goals for Cape Breton (23-14-3-3).
In Charlottetown, Chris Doyle and Geoff Walker connected twice at the Prince Edward Island Rocket shaded the Acadie-Bathurst Titan 5-4. Brad Gallant added the other marker for the Rocket (20-17-1-0) while Drew Paris, Jonathan Laberge, Mathieu Perreault and Dany Masse replied for the Titan (19-17-1-1)

Sick display by Fullerton! Absolutely sick goal-tending. Definitely deserving of the first star.
I would not call the Gallant fight a win. Wasn't much of a fight at all to be honest. Gallant was trying to throw to many over hand shots against a much taller opponent... he should have come up from underneath more. The Boland hit that sparked it was much more entertaining.
I almost can't wait for Sunday. The best outcome would be for the Foggies to win tomorrow night and then by the rubber match on Sunday there should be plenty of bad blood between the two teams.

Wasn't much of a fight but a win for Gallant IMO. Bolland was just hanging on to him the majority of the time. The Foggies will likely have Passingham at least once this weekend likely Sunday afternoon.

You would have to give Gallant the decision on that one. Boland did f@#k all, he just held on. Did Boland even land anything?

Neither landed any they were all helmet shots (it happened right in front of me). I wouldn’t call it a win for either both players tried to get the helmets off but no luck. Hopefully next game we'll see a real fight.
