Both teams seem to be working harder in the offensive zone than the defensive. It'll be a high scoring game if it continues.

Dogs had their chances. What a bad penalty to take late in a tied game. Just before the penalty Grant had a chance to clear it and instead drove it around the boards where it was intercepted by a Devil. To bad, it would of been nice to pick up a point.

SEA DOGS FALL TO FOG DEVILS 3-2 Saint John’s Third Period Comeback Falls Short; Win Streak Ends At Four Games
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Saturday, January 5, 2008
ST. JOHN’S, NF --- On the strength of a 38-save performance by import net minder Timo Pielmeier, the St. John’s Fog Devils earned a 3-2 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday night at Mile One Stadium, handing Port City’s major junior squad their first loss of the calendar year in the process. .
Saturday’s loss also brings an end to Saint John’s four-game win streak and evens this week’s three-game Fog Devils-Sea Dogs series at one game apiece. The series’ grudge match will take place on Sunday afternoon in St. John’s (1:30pm EST).
After the opening two periods produced a 2-1 score which favoured the Fog Devils, the Sea Dogs tied things up with four minutes remaining in regulation on Saturday, only to surrender a power play marker shortly thereafter which ultimately cost them the game. Special teams played a pivotal factor throughout the match, as St. John’s converted on two of their five man-up opportunities on the night while the Sea Dogs were denied on all four of theirs.
Keven Charland and Scott Howes both scored for Saint John in a losing effort, while Travis Fullerton made 19 saves in enduring just his eighth loss of 2007-08.
Meanwhile, St. John’s received quantitative offensive production from Samuel Grenache, Mathieu Labrie, and Matt Fillier on the evening while goaltender Timo Pielmeier improved to 15-16 on the year with a semi-heroic performance between the pipes for the Fog Devils which earned him a First Star of the Game nod.
The home team struck first on Saturday night, with Mathieu Labrie banging home a rebound via a slap shot on the fly 5:33 into the first period to earn his fifth tally of the season. Matt Fillier and Taylor MacDougall earned assists on the goal, scored in transition as St. John’s established a 1-0 lead early in the contest.
A few minutes later, Saint John earned an outstanding chance to tie the match at one apiece when they were awarded a two-man advantage when Nick Layton and Henrick Lavoie were assessed back-to-back penalties. Despite some high-quality chances, the Sea Dogs were unable to produce the equalizer however, as some stellar goaltending from Pielmeier (and his crossbar) kept the visitors from getting on the scoreboard midway through the opening frame.
Saint John continued to apply heavy pressure in Fog Devils territory throughout the duration of the first period, registering 11 shots on goal during the twenty minute session but, ultimately, zero goals as St. John’s entered the first intermission clinging to a precarious 1-0 lead.
The visitors were able to register their first goal of the game early in the second period when Keven Charland took a corner pass from Alexande Picard-Hooper and proceeded to unleash a rocket of a shot from a dozen feet out that zoomed past Pielmeier and made the score 1-1 at the 3:04 mark of the middle frame.
On an impressive one-man rush, Payton Liske nearly gave Saint John their first lead of the game seven minutes later, outmanoeuvring a St. John’s defenseman between the face-off circles in Fog Devils territory prior to getting off a solid backhand shot that Pielmeier managed to get his right pad on, keeping the score deadlocked at one apiece in the process.
The Fog Devils than retook the lead on the power play, with Matt Fillier redirecting a T.J. Brennan shot past Fullerton to make the score 2-1 in favour of the home team with 23:46 remaining in regulation.
St. John’s nearly added to their lead a moment later when Jean-Simon Allard earned a short-handed breakaway, but Fullerton was able to stop the 18-year old centre on his attempt, sending Saturday’s contest into the second intermission with the hosts leading by a single tally.
Some exciting end-to-end action accompanied the start of the third period, with both teams registering strong scoring chances during the opening minutes of regulation’s final frame. Both goalies were able to thwart their respective opposition’s attempts however, as the score remained 2-1 in favour of the City of Legends’ major junior squad throughout the opening half of the third.
The Sea Dogs then went on the power play with 9:39 remaining in regulation when Taylor MacDougall was assessed a two minute minor for holding. Despite a solid 120-second effort form Saint John’s top offensive specialists the Fog Devils’ PK Unit was able to win their fourth special teams battle of the night, preserving the one-goal St. John’s advantage in doing so.
An enormous stop by Travis Fullerton off of a low wrist shot by Samuel Grenache from point-blank range then took place shortly after MacDougall’s penalty expired as the Sea Dogs’ veteran net minder kept his team within immediate striking distance of the Fog Devils with a spectacular sliding pad save on what appeared to be a sure goal for the 18-year old winger.
An incredible goal by Scott Howes then tied the match up 2-2 with 4:07 remaining in regulation. The talented forward took a pass from Alex Grant at centre ice and out-raced a trio of Fog Devils players after shovelling the puck forward; Pielmaier ventured out of his crease momentarily and Howes made him pay, wiring a wrist shot past the St. John’s goalie from a seemingly impossible angle to the right of the home team’s net and earning his 24th goal of the season in sensational fashion at a highly opportune time.
With 1:40 remaining in the third however, the Fog Devils managed to pull back in front when Maxime Pomerleau set Samuel Grenache up for a power play goal which gave the home team a 3-2 advantage late in regulation.
The Sea Dogs were unable to re-tie the game up despite a frantic surge late in the match, ultimately falling one-goal short of sending the contest into overtime.
Sunday afternoon will see a re-rematch staged between these two teams at Mile One Stadium. The Sea Dogs’ next home game is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 9 versus the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
