Sea Dogs head into break with 22 wins QMJHL Saint John loses 4-3 to Moncton on road prior to 11-day layoff
Andrew McGilligan Telegraph-Journal Published Monday December 17th, 2007 Appeared on page B10
SAINT JOHN - In their final game before the holiday break the Saint John Sea Dogs came up flat, dropping a 4-3 decision in Moncton to the Wildcats.
Matt Marquardt, Devon MacAuslund, Matt Eagles and Jesse Biduke had one goal apiece for Moncton. Scott Howes, Alexandre Leduc and Keven Charland replied for Saint John.
Charland said no one in the Sea Dogs dressing room was happy with their play on Sunday.
"We didn't play very good in the first two periods just like the last time we played here," Charland said. "We woke up in the third but it's not enough to play 20 minutes when the other team plays 60."
The loss drops the Sea Dogs record to 22-10-1-2 while Moncton improves to 14-18-2-4.
The Wildcats had the jump on the Sea Dogs early in the contest testing Sea Dogs starter Troy Passingham in his first ever Quebec Major Junior Hockey League start.
Just around the four-minute mark of the first, Saint John's Brett Gallant and Moncton's Kelan Herr dropped the gloves. The fight was a long one with both players landing several blows with Gallant getting the decision in the end.
Herr picked up an extra two minutes for interference giving the Sea Dogs the first power play of the contest.
Despite a couple of shots on goal, Moncton starter Nicola Riopel kept the Sea Dogs from capitalizing on the man-advantage.
Goaltending was the story of the scoreless opening period as Riopel stopped 10 shots while Passingham blocked 15.
Saint John opened the scoring at 3:05 of the second. Howes kept the puck in Moncton's zone along the boards, walked out in front and snapped a shot over the glove of a partially screened Riopel.
The Sea Dogs had a good opportunity to increase the lead to 2-0 with Pierre-Marc Lessard in the box for roughing, but couldn't get the special teams unit to connect for a goal.
The Wildcats tied the game 1-1 shortly after at the 10:34 mark. Saint John forward Matthew Stoddard had the puck stolen from him by Phil Mangan in the Sea Dogs end. Mangan then fed a pass to Fredericton product Eagles who was all alone and beat Passingham with a deke to his backhand.
Much like the first, both goalies stole the show - especially Passingham who made several saves on point-blank shots thanks to some defensive miscues from Saint John.
The Wildcats broke the tie in the opening minutes of the third. With Saint John forward Francois Gauthier in the box for tripping, Marquardt one-timed a pass in the slot past the blocker of Passingham for a 2-1 Moncton edge.
The Sea Dogs came within centimetres of tying the game at the midway point of the third. Leduc and Chris Di Domenico had a two-one-one shorthanded break, but Leduc's shot beat Riopel but not the post. Just after the chance, Di Domenico was called for slashing giving the Wildcats a two-man advantage.
The first penalty had just expired when Moncton native MacAusland batted in a rebound past Passingham who made the initial save on a shot from Rothesay's Chris Morehouse. The marker at 11:45 of the final period made it 3-1 in favour of Moncton.
The Sea Dogs got one back less than two minutes later when Leduc shoveled a rebound off a David Stich point shot past Riopel.
The Sea Dogs tied the game 3-3 at 15:24 of the third in similar fashion to their second goal. Charland drove the net and fired a rebound past Riopel with defenceman Stich once again firing a point shot on goal to start the play.
Moncton got a second two-man advantage late in the third when Di Domenico took a slashing penalty followed by a delay of game infraction on Yann Sauve.
Moncton made the Sea Dogs pay with their third power play marker, this one coming off the stick of Biduke at 17:00 for a 4-3 Moncton lead. The goal would prove to be the game-winner as the Wildcats held off a late Saint John charge in the final minute.
The Sea Dogs are off until Dec. 28 when they travel to Bathurst to take on the Titan. Saint John is home the next night to face Lewiston at Harbour Station.

I love how the article puts a totally positive spin on the situation with it's title.
Great job, that's the way to encourage people to go to the rink!

Just watched the fight again. My son and I both give it to Gallant, but Herr did land a few. Brett did control it.

Herr - What a little douchebag. He gets a cheapshot in on Gallant when the linesman are between them, then the little pansie refuses to drop them with Gallant when Gallant wants him to go in the 2nd period. Does that mean Grant is also a "little pansie" for refusing to drop them with Lessard three minutes later in the period?
