Barrieau Celebration Weekend
October 18, 2007
Harness racing fans in New Brunswick will have a multitude of opportunities to meet Gilles Barrieau, Canada's representative to the World Driving Championship, this weekend and wish him luck competing in New Zealand and Australia this November.
To kick things off, Barrieau will be available on Saturday at Exhibition Park Raceway from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. (AST) in building one to sign a special commemorative sports card.
Barrieau, who has recorded 188 wins this season, will drive in all 12 races carded that afternoon at Exhibition Park Raceway. Post time is set for 1:00 p.m.
That evening Barrieau will be the centre of attention at the Saint John's Sea Dogs hockey game. Barrieau will sign autographs between 6:30 and 6:50 p.m. and again during intermission. The World Driving Championship banner will also make a stop at the Harbour Station arena and give fans the opportunity to sign their names, best wishes and good luck messages to Barrieau.
The Hon. Roly MacIntyre, Minister of Supply and Services, will fill in for Premier Shawn Graham who had a last minute schedule change and present Barrieau with his official Canadian driving colours during opening ceremonies. Barrieau will drop the puck to start the game. Game time for the Saint John Sea Dogs vs. Gatineau Olympiques is set for 7:00 p.m.
This year's World Driving Championship will take place in New Zealand and Australia from November 1 - 9. Only three other Canadians have ever won the Championship, Jody Jamieson and Sylvain and Herve Filion.
