SAINT JOHN - A total of nine New Brunswickers will suit up for the three provincial teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this season.
The Acadie-Bathurst Titan will dress the most N.B. players with five listed on their final roster. The Titan group is headed up by Saint John defenceman Brad Tesink, who is sidelined with a broken wrist and could be out until Thanksgiving.
Tesink is joined on the blue-line by St. Quentin's Mathieu Labrie and Bas-Caraquet native Remi Blanchard.
The Titan forwards are led by captain and Woodstock resident Jordan Clendenning and 2007 QMJHL entry draft first-round pick Cameron Critchlow of Fredericton.
The Saint John Sea Dogs have two provincial players on the roster in goaltender Travis Fullerton of Riverview and New Maryland product Mike Thomas.
The Moncton Wildcats will have two N.B. players on their forward lines in Fredericton's Matt Eagles and Moncton's Devon MacAusland.
Other provincial notables are Moncton's Kelsey Tessier, who plays for Patrick Roy's Quebec Remparts and Patrice Cromier of Cap-Pele, a member of the Rimouski Oceanic. Both Tessier and Cormier are projected as first-round picks in the 2008 National Hockey League entry draft by International Scouting Service.
SCHEDULE: The Sea Dogs will be the first N.B. team to play a QMJHL regular season game. Saint John opens its season on the road Thursday at 8 p.m. in Lewiston against the defending QMJHL champion Maineiacs. The Sea Dogs' home opener is set for Sept. 21 against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
The Wildcats and Titan open their season against one another in Bathurst on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats first home game is Sunday against the St. John's Fog Devils at 6 p.m.
STARTING: Travis Fullerton will get the start for Saint John on Thursday in Lewiston against the Maineiacs. Sea Dogs' head coach and general manager Jacques Beaulieu said Swiss goaltender Robert Mayer will start against the Prince Edward Island Rocket on Sunday in Charlottetown.
The start of the game will be delayed as Lewiston will celebrate their 2006-07 championship before the game.
"With all the hype it might be a little too much for Robert (Mayer) to throw him to the wolves like that," Beaulieu said.
STEPPING DOWN: Val-d'Or Foreurs general manager Stephane Pilotte stepped down Monday after eight seasons with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team.
Pilotte, a teacher, met with team brass during training camp to discuss added workloads at his school. The two sides eventually decided to go their separate ways, the league said in a release.
Pilotte helped the Foreurs reach the President Cup final on two occasions. Val-d'Or won the title in 2001.
Head coach Eric Lavigne will take over GM duties. He occupied a similar position with the UQTR Patriotes in the 1990s.
