On the trade front, correct. They can only trade away, or for, 20's and draft picks. They can obviously still cut people. Or grab free agents like they did with Bergin, Crawford, Neilly, etc etc last year.

Rioux was a pretty dependable D who also brought leadership and the kind of friendly personality that goes over well in a community. JB is definitely making a questionable move by trading him and is getting less than stellar return for it. In a league short on quality D, this appears to be somewhat of a dumping. Rioux will play 2 full years in this league and they will likley be his best.

This would have been Rioux's last season on this team anyway he wouldn't be one of our 20's next year not to say we aren't losing a decent player or anything I surprised they didn't trade for another player though. McNeil, Pisano, and MacDonald is a pretty big drop off after the first 4 guys.

Umm...are we forgetting Despres here boys? We still have him. It's Grant, Stich, Sauve, Amyot and Despres...then McNeil MacDonald and Pisano.

Yup I did sorry Leask forgot Despres sorry damn it got me again. So all in all it's not that terrible Rioux was likely destined for the 3rd pairing and that spot will go to McNeil and Pisano will likely be the 7th Defensemen over MacDonald although I'm not 100% sold on that being such a great option.

Doubt that too Canucklehead. I still think Pisano is #8 on the chart. This move was likely done to justify keeping MacDonald and getting him playing time. He'll likely eat a good chunk of the minutes Rioux would have got. Otherwise the best option would have been to send MacDonald down where he could get more ice time and develop.
Pisano will be nothing but a big body physical presence and backup fighter. You can develop a lot of those traits without giving much time in the starting lineup. MacDonald is a young player they will likely look to contribute a bit offensively and take a regular shift for the future. To develop that he has to play. With Rioux, MacDonald wasn't going to play at all in the Q this year. No room. Without Rioux it opens up time to be split between MacDonald and McNeil.

Yeah I can see MacDonald playing and having Pisano fill in once in awhile when they feel the need to add some toughness for certain games.

I thought we usually carried 7 Defencemen last season..............I am not sure why everyone is pegging MacDonal in already,IMO he still will be cut. From what I saw he isn;t ready to make the jump to the Q. I don't know what sort of offence your looking for from him Leask but that is not his game at all. He is a stay at home type that plays physical and plays the man well. Any type of points from him would be a bonus.

I agree Killer. I don't think MacDonald is ready but this deal must have been done to allow him time to play at this level. Meaning I think JB and company are higher on this guy than they should be, especially for this year right here. Maybe I'm wrong and they will go with 7 D, with the other 2 being McNeil and Pisano, but I get the suspicion that the deal was done to allow MacDonald time to play instead of cutting him, which they would have had to do with Rioux around because no way MacDonald gets ice time with Rioux still here.

I find it strange that MacDonald is still around after not being dressed for the first 2 preseason games...............is he hurt? I still think we will cut him and would serve better purpose to play at a lower level and round out his game.

If the sea dogs have 4 lines of defense then they would carry 8 D, 4 lines of For wards would be 12 forwards not sure if thats the lineup JB is looking at or not maybe we will go with 7 D and have more forwards or maybe just carry some spares in-case someone gets hurt during the course of the season.
