Hiodonin, Czech Republic --- After finishing with a record of 2-0-1 in the round robin portion of the 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Men’s Under-18 Tournament, Team Canada will face Team Russia in the Bronze Medal Game on Saturday at Zimny Stadium in Piestany, Slovakia at 1:30pm Atlantic Time.
Team Canada/Saint John Sea Dogs defenseman Yann Sauve played extremely well in the round robin, logging substantial ice time on defence while chipping in with some timely offence for the elite squad from the Great White North.
After a disappointing opening match defeat at the hands of the Swedes on Tuesday, Canada needed a victory over Team Switzerland on Wednesday in order to stay in medal contention at the prestigious international tournament. Trailing 2-1 in the third period, Sauve beat Swiss goalie Benjamin Conz with a well-placed shot to tie the game at two apiece. Sauve’s power play tally was quickly followed by a goal off the stick of Chris Doyle that put the Canadians up 3-2. From there, Sauve and the rest of Canada’s defensive unit held the Swiss offence in check as the one-goal lead held up in the late going and Canada’s medal hopes remained in tact.
With Sweden’s win over Team Switzerland on Thursday, Canada’s hopes of winning a fourth consecutive Gold Medal were thwarted, but a 4-1 win over the Czechs secured the defending champs a second place finish in Pool A and a berth in the Bronze Medal Game against the Russians, who finished second in Pool B with a record of 2-1.
Team Sweden and Team Finland will play for Gold at Hodonin Arena on Saturday. Both teams went 3-0 in the round robin.
