Apparently, there was an announcement this morning in $3 million in funding for Centre 200 renovations. Although I do not have all the details, apparently the non-upper bowl end of the building will have 14 suites and there will be an additional "theatre seats" in the main concourse end of the building resulting in the capacity being over 5,000. Cosmetic changes will also be a part of this renovation, including a new clock.
The Hall of Fame in the main concourse will have to be moved because of the renovation probably to the other side of the main concourse room.
I am getting this second hand so details are somewhat sketchy.

That's great, but I question the logic if it's only boosting capacity by 500 or so.
But if this is what we need to have a proper Mem Cup bid then there won't be any complaining here.
Any idea where the $3mil is coming from? I assume it's all 3 levels of government in some form.
2012 Memorial Cup in Sydney sounds good to me! ;D

Some of it might be the type of seating being added, i.e. higher priced seats. These will NOT be the $14 tickets most of us pay. I don;t have details as to where all the money came from but I assume a lot of it is federal as I heard last night that Peter MacKay was going to be in the area making announcements, one of which was about Centre 200.
And, yes, this is all about getting the Memorial Cup.

Not as low as the Dieppe Commandoes. ;D Indeed, it's $1.5 million coming from the federal government (thru ECBC)......... $500,000 from the CBRM......... and $500,000 from the Screaming Eagles. We'll have 13 new skyboxes, a new video scoreboard (instant replay at C200? As if referees didn't have it hard enough in our rink! haha), club seating, and renovations to the concession area and washrooms. With total capacity going over 5,000 - here's hoping the Eagles will be able to bid on the Memorial Cup someday in the not too distant future!

This is really great news for the town, the team and the fans. If anyone is listening how about tossing in some restaurant seating or something. The old "club forum" type thing was great and actually got me to the game early. However it was only a matter of time before it would close as you couldn't see the game from the seating. A pub atmosphere with a good view of the game is going to generate a lot more revenue than say leather seats above section 1 and 2. Just one man's opinion !!! P.S. I can't wait for a jumbo tron !!!!! ;D ;D

As an Eagle fan I think the biggest part of the whole thing is that the team is throwing 500k into the process. We've all seen how building disputes and poor attendance has ripped the heart out of the Lewiston and Bathurst fans and if anything this cements the Eagles future as part of the Island culture and community.

Absolutely Jack - I was saying this myself earlier!! 10 years ago, this team almost did not have enough cash to pay their commitments and now they are making significant investments into their home building. The team has come a very, very long way!!

Excellent point, one that really does illustrate how lucky we Eagles fans are and how much we've to be grateful for given what's going on in those other centres you mention.

Excellent! I'm looking forward to the new scoreboard above all else mentioned as the current one is really outdated and more of a small-rink type rather than what a 5000+ facility should have. Plus if any more lights burn out on that thing we'll never know what the score is I just hope they keep in mind the mid-upper part of the upper bowl viewing and not impede too much like Halifax. Looking forward to the facelift and upgrade!

One thing I hope they do is change the lighting -- more specifically similar to Moncton and other rinks that have shades over the lights so the place can be put in darkness or light very quickly -- adds excitement
