It took quite a bit longer than expected, but Olivier Roy was taken by Edmonton in the 5th round of today's NHL Draft. He'd been ranked in the 2nd or 3rd rounds as far as I understood. Quite a few goalies went before him, including a guy like JF Berube of the Montreal Junior - who was Jake Allen's backup this year and didn't play that much. So it had to be a long, frustrating wait for Olivier. Thankfully it's over.
Overcoming a slip in the draft isn't something he hasn't done before though. Let's remember he was ranked in the 1st round in the 2007 Q Draft, only to slip to the Eagles in rd #3. Look at what he's done since, probably the steal of that draft.
Congratulations Olivier on joining the Oilers! As far as I recall, he's the third Eagle to be drafted by the former Cape Breton (Oilers) parent club. The others were Trevor Ettinger and JF Dufort, in the late rounds of the 98 and 2002 drafts respectively. Unless I'm missing someone?

Worth the wait I love that fact the Oilers drafted him they are drafting some very good young players ... could become a very exciting team to watch ....
They also drafted Rajala in RD4 and I think they gotta be thrilled to get MPS at #10 ...
Best of luck Olivier!!!

First of two CB players taken in the draft so far, as he's joined by Ashton Bernard to New Jersey..... no one saw that coming I'm sure.

Congrats to roy and the Oilers.
It's not often you get the chance to draft a kid who might be the best goalie from his class in the 5th round. Other guys have more hype this year (see: JF Berube), but the bottom line is, Roy has been doing it consistently in the Q for 2 years, and he's shown no reason to bet against him becoming a starting goalie in the NHL.

Small goalies that go down early are not commodities that NHL teams drool over. For all OBR has done in the Q, he's not a great pro prospect.

So the #2 Ranking for N.A Goalies by "Professional Scouts" that do this for a living is not worth a crap.

Most other scouting reports had him lower. I thought he'd go late 3rd or early 4th, he even went later than that.

Olivier Roy just needs to fill out the kid is 6 feet tall so height isn't an issue nothing wrong with bring 6 feet. It's the 167lbs but don't forget he's only not even 18 years old for a couple more weeks. As far as going down to early that can be taught and a good goaltender coach should have no trouble working with an athletic goaltender like Olivier Roy. He's still a very good goaltender and a great pick in the 5th RD for the Edmonton Oilers! I thought he'd be gone in the 3rd Round personally but at least he was drafted

Berube had no hype...he wasnt even drafted into the Q.. Im not surprised Roy fell in the draft, I am surprised he fell to round 5 though. I figured he would have been in the 3rd round range.
