Former Eagle captain, Dean Ouellet had a huge game Friday with 2 goals and 3 assists as U de M beat St. FX 7-3. Unfortunately, for Dean, Moncton lost 3-1 to Dal on Saturday.
Eagles fans have a chance to watch or tape the Eastlink replay of the UNB / Acadia game from last night which has 7 former Eagles playing in it. Beau Prokopetz, Philippe Bertrand, Tyler Whitehead and Jonathan Laberge played for Acadia and Chris Culligan, Luke Gallant and Jordan Clendenning played for UNB. It's on Eastlink this afternoon at 2:00pm.
As a lead in to this game UNB beat St. Mary's in Halifax 6-1 and 2nd place Acadia beat PEI 2-1 in Wolfville on Friday night.

Culligan had a beauty goal to open the scoring in the 2-1 win over Acadia! What a quick release on the one-timer, a great pass from I think Jonathan Harty maybe? Can't remember for sure. Will take some getting used to seeing Cully wear #57 though!
And on UNB's second goal, what a seeing eye diagonal pass made by Luke Gallant from the left point, to John Scott Dickson at the right side of the net.
FOrmer Eagle Jo Laberge scored Acadia's lone goal.
UNB remained undefeated despite being outshot something like 50-21... hard to believe a team so dominant could be outshot like that!

deer, I found this in response to your last thought Taken from www.unbhockeyfans.com/"The shot count may have been generous to the Axemen and stingy with the V-Reds, as the official tally was 48-21 in favour of Acadia. The shots were not indicative of the play, as this game was pretty even with perhaps UNB having a slight edge in play, particularly on the penalty kill. Acadia did do a phenomenal job blocking shots while shorthanded, and this obviously affected the UNB shot count." It was also nice to see Culli out there killing penalties all game and in the last minutes while protecting a 2-1 lead. Especially nice to see him get a great pass when he read the play and got himself open in scoring position!

Watching Culligan's tenacious, two-way game, and how he never quits on a play made me realize how much we miss him this year in Cape Breton.

After starting the year with 31 straight wins, UNB lost their first game of the year to a University team last night against the University of Maine Black Bears. UNB might have been feeling the effects of 2 hard fought games against SMU and Acadia to a degree but the Maine defence did a great job of preventing very many quality scoring chances while they scored 2 power play goals on UNB. UNB dressed and played 8 defencemen and played the backup goalie for 2 plus periods while 2 of their top 9 forwards sat out. Maine themselves had just finished a lengthy 9 game undefeated streak, including a win over the 3rd ranked team in the States, Colorado College.
It might be a blessing in disguise because it gets the monkey off their back and it does not cost them in terms of AUS and CIS play. It might also give coach Gardiner MacDougall a little more leverage in terms of trying to improve the team's play.

After their mid-week loss to Maine, UNB got quickly back on track with 2 road wins 3-1 over Moncton and 9-4, down the street, over St. Thomas. In a league, where any team can beat any other team on a given night, UNB's 21 wins in a row have to be considered very impressive. UNB aside, 2nd place Acadia has had recent losses to Dal and St. FX, 3rd place St. Mary's has had recent losses to UPEI and Acadia and 4th place St. FX has had recent losses to Dal and Moncton. In Saturday's 9-4 win over St. Thomas which was highlighted by UNB captain Kyle Bailey's 4 goals and 1 assist, with the score 3-3 and St. Thomas on the power play, Culli was up to his old tricks; from www.unbhockeyfans.com/Corcoran (Summerside, PE) was whistled for a blow to the head at 3:33 and had the automatic ten minute misconduct added and the V-Reds were temporarily down to four starting d-men. Despite this setback it only took UNB another 44 seconds to retake the lead, shorthanded, as Culligan scored a highlight reel goal as he one-timed the pass from Luke Gallant (Bedford, NS). It was Culli's 2nd shorthanded goal of the year. Also last night, former Eagle Cam Fergus exploded for 4 goals in St. Mary's 7-3 win over Dal. That outburst has moved Fergus into 2nd place in league scoring, 6 points behind Hunter Tremblay of UNB. Big games this week include Acadia at St. Mary's Wednesday, St. Mary's at UNB on Friday and Acadia at UNB on Saturday. Mike Danton could see his first AUS action for St. Mary's in Wednesday's game.

Good to see Cully pop another shorty - he scored some beautiful and memorable shorthanded goals in his five years here. To me, few goals lift the fans out of the seats quite like a shorthanded marker.
Awesome to see Fergus explode for four goals - he's another guy who adapted to the AUS remarkably well straight out of major junior. Really, most Q players - even 90-100 point guys - have a tough time in their first year in the AUS. Not Fergus or Culligan though.
And it'll be a media circus quite unlike what the AUS is used to seeing when Mike Danton suits up for his first game! Wonder who his linemates will be... I'm guessing they won't break up any top units that have awesome chemistry just to accomodate him, even if he's a former NHLer. I'm guessing Danton will start on a secondary scoring line and Trevor Steinburg will see where it goes from there? A very interesting story to follow if nothing else! It could end up being a great story about a guy taking advantage of the high calibre of hockey in the AUS to reignite his life and career....... or the story could be a sad laughingstock down the road and a time the SMU hockey program would rather forget.......... but either way it'll be intriguing to watch it unfold!

UNB's 2 games tonight and tomorrow against St. Mary's and then Acadia could both be sellouts. The Danton story and the UNB winning streak might both be drawing some extra fans to AUS rinks these days. Speaking of which, UNB plays at St. FX next Friday in Antigonish. Nice writeup in today's Daily Gleaner about a former Eagle. dailygleaner.canadaeast.com/sports/article/937021

I think Danton and Culligan should go toe-to-toe at centre ice, right off the opening faceoff. ;D
UNB is playing at St FX next Friday? That one might be worth a road trip. Four former Eagles on the UNB side, and a giant slew of Cape Bretoners on the X team. And AUS hockey is always a treat to watch - really wish we had a team here.

I don't even think they'll play...U de M at St FX was cancelled so i can't see UNB going all the way to Halifax. As of 2pm, the St. Thomas @ Dal and Moncton @ St. F.X. games are postponed but Acadia @ UPEI and Saint Mary's @ UNB are still showing as going ahead. But if St. Thomas can't travel from Fredericton to Halifax then how can Saint Mary's travel from Halifax to Fredericton? Maybe they just haven't posted the other postponements yet.

Might SMU have driven to Frederiction last night? Nobody at SMU has class on Friday anyway, do they

St.Mary's did make it to UNB but late and UNB continued their undefeated streak with a 3-1 win.
Here's a post from austrooper on the HFboards:
One of UNB's best games. They never let up all night long. The score was flattering to Saint Mary's, moreso than in past meetings. Really think the warmth of the building plays a factor. Teams seem to wilt late in periods and UNB's depth comes to the forefront. Dickson and Cullingan were particularly dominant and Fullerton played well but he really wasn't tested much. Good to see Brandon Verge play a decent game, although he looked foolish on the Tremblay goal, which was the backbreaker. Danton was no factor at all. He looked a little sluggish but give the guy a break: he was playing just his second game in six years. The guy likes to finish his checks and he's an energy guy. May not have much of an impact this season, but he'll fit in. Will be interesting to see how much of a fight Acadia puts up tonight, particularly after losing to PEI last night.
Note: Acadia lost to UPEI, showing once again how tough the AUS league is.
