That likely makes 2x 3rd round picks a bust to NCAA. Not a good way to build for the future. They're 16 and 1 is playing Midget in Halifax. Why do their Q careers have to start at 16? Nothing says Dachsyhyn isn't back next year bigger and stronger and makes the team in a top 9 role. I said LIKELY. You don't pick players to not make your team. If they are highly touted players why didn't they make the team. There are weaker/later picks on the team and more spots open this year so its not the same as a player like Fortier getting sent back. Players that leave for NCAA reasons are simply not good enough or less likely to report the following year, when they see their options get closer. I hope he makes the team next year and stays but I think your personal emotions are getting in the way of seeing the facts as they stand now!

Who cares. We aren't talking about Nathan MacKinnon here. Plenty of guys that will be similar players and perhaps be in the league at age 20. Not worth fussing about why he didn't play in an exhibition game. lol guru you make a posting history out of telling people on a message board who care more then anyone about the team that they shouldn't care about X and Y about the team. If they're not questioning who is/is not on the team and why what exactly is the point of a message board like this. Everyone can get stats and scores from the Q site. I guess I enjoy worthwhile discussions, strategies going into the next game, game recaps, how someone is doing with increased ice-time, etc. Don't got time to argue about standard junior players opting not to play. Drouin staying in midget, now that was topical!

Well obviously some people are interested in discussing it, and I doubt there's someone forcing you to read it or reply?
Not participating in the discussions you don't want to seems like a pretty simple and non-trollish solution.

For the record my comment had more to do with Americans than Dachyshyn. Eichel and Marino as prime examples of taking a big gamble instead of going for a safer pick. At some point they are going to learn from these experiences and make sure they've got a verbal commitment before making the pick.
I know with Marino there are rumours about him changing his mind last minute, but they are just rumours at this point. None of us knows if he committed or not.

Better having him not report to Halifax than somewhere else. Marino probably not in the same league as Eichel though, but we will see. Players turn down Halifax, but few seem to turn down Quebec. The question is, why aren't smaller market teams doing preventative drafting?

Lots of people turn down Quebec. Noah Hanafin as an example, and they can't get him hosting the mem cup. Sometimes Halifax has verbal commits, but players are free to change their mind. They had one from Cichy, no show. They rumored to have one with Eichel, but he no showed when the Q changed it's NCAA package rules. Marino could very well be the same thing.
I'd rather see Halifax continue to go after high end talent than "safe" picks. Marino was 1st round talent, taken at the end of the 3rd round. Other "safe" picks Halifax has had in that general area: Jon Lacroix-Courville, Francis Turbide, Vincent Watt, Brian Lovell....
Sometimes the "safe" pick doesn't get you a whole lot either.

There were better players available when the guys you listed above were taken, but for whatever reason, the scouting/management chose them. When I say "safe" I mean pick guys with upside that you know will report, not pick guys with limited talent who will probably never do anything noteworthy in the Q. I'm personally sick of them gambling high picks on Americans that don't show. You're happy with Cichy, Eichel, and Marino being picked and giving the middle finger to Halifax? Not me... when you trade away all your picks to contend, you need to rebuild, not hope for the 6-49 numbers to pay off.

Agree with Gman on Cichy and Marino. There can be players of similar quality taken. Actually wait, I can't remember when Cichy was taken. But I do like like Eichel pick, it was obvious he would make an impact, worth the risk. Cichy and Marino not all that unique.

Mike Cichy was drafted in 2006... 9 drafts ago. So it's 3 players in 9 years. And for one of them (Eichel) the loss was partially recouped. And who knows, Marino may still show up. I wasn't too thrilled with the Cichy and Eichel picks, just because Halifax was short on picks, but this year Halifax had 6 picks in the top 5 rounds, so gambling with an extra 3rd rounder isn't that big a deal to me.

I agree that "gambling" on Marino at the end of the third round is no big loss. Marino, according to all the reports I've heard of him, is not just an average talent in terms of junior. With the guys we had already looking for spots on our back end, it wouldn't help to draft a safe D there. We had 4 guys we knew could play in this league on the blueline (outside of the pleasant surprise in Nauss)Same with up front, we had plenty of talent that can make the team. Drafting more guys who are going to stay in midget when you already making tough cuts like Blain-Dupius has a diminishing return at some point.
You only have so many bottom spots, at some point you need to go after guys to fill the top ones.

Tough to argue the good players that were available, since based on Halifax's history with the safe picks, they miss on the good players too. It's easy to look back and say, well Halifax should have taken Kelsey Tessier instead of Cichy, but for all we know the next best player to Cichy on their list was Mitch Flynn.

Line up. It will be very interesting to see how the forward lines shape up, and who is in the Press Box. Ducharme calls it 'healthy competition', I wonder if players who expect ice time this year will feel the same way if they find themselves being healthy scratched. If they go with 6 D, the 2 Fwds sit. If they want Crossley and King to get some game action, then someone will be sitting who had a fairly regular shift last year or thinks they will this year (Fortier, Watt). It will be interesting to see how Ducharme handles it if the bubble forwards each night, that are dressed, play well enough to warrant staying in the line-up. I am sure you could probably scratch Kelly Bent 10-15 times during the year and not cause much fuss doing so. The type of player he is and role he plays is not always required depending on who your opponent is. Especially seeing you'd still have Vuic in the lineup if things got unexpectedly greasy. he'll wind up suspended for 5-10 games anyhow and he has lots of practice sitting in a suit... here in PEI we used to call him the flower boy because he was always handing out flowers from one of the sponsors to some old dame in the stands

And yet you replied two more times last night to the discussion that you thought was a waste of time. Strange. I agree with MikeC. It's not like this is an ongoing problem that has cut the legs out from underneath the team. There isn't a junior franchise in the country that wouldn't trade their last two years with ours, the Moose had to make tough cuts this year at camp, and they have a surplus of draft picks next year to add more young talent. Sure, we'd be a little better off in the short term if they used the Marino pick on a kid who was guaranteed to attend camp but is it going to gravely change the fortune of the team? No. If the gamble works out does the Mooseheads ceiling rise in the next few years? Yes. A risk here and there is worth it, in my opinion.
