Cats have named Zach Fortin the starter. That means CB now gets a 4th round pick in 2016. Can't say I'm overly thrilled with this, but hopefully he proves me wrong. That essentially rules out 19-year-olds Rioux and Kelly for the back-up role. Waite and Grant won't be playing any pre-season games to maintain NCAA eligibility. The battle for the back-up spot is realistically down to Mann-Dixon, Dupre and Talbot-Tassi. Where/when did they name him the starter? Not a big fan of a 20 year old and 18 year old, that was the case last year and it led to basically no real returning goalie this year. Ideally one of the young guys earns the #2 spot, a "goalie of the future" is needed. Neither of the young guys are sticking around so that's not happening. I'm actually a bit confused about Waite because from what I've seen he could be in the running for the back-up role. Is this just another guy they're not going to be able to get to report when push comes to shove?

Strange timing on this ... obviously was decided before camp even started as Rumble has not even been around to see him (or any other goalie) in camp yet. Speaking of which, what are the Cats doing for cuts with Rumble away? Holding everyone until he gets back? Or is someone else charged with cutting players the head coach has not seen in action? This seems like a bad time of year to be away from your team as head coach ...

They'll be cutting some people probably on Sunday night or Monday morning. They've been in touch with Rumble over the phone every day since players reported. I'm not too worried about it.

It's great that they added a lot of goalies to the depth chart, bit in reality are any of the 18-20 year olds a legit Q #1? That's yet to be seen. The other part is, they desperately needed a "goalie of the future" and drafted 3 young guys, now one has not shown to camp and the other two won't play exhibitions to "keep their options open" so maybe there is no "goalie of the future" in the system once again. Ideally there would have been one backing up Dubeau last year or the last 2 years. Seems like a lot of half measures since the 2010 Presidents Cup. I'm sure somebody will call me negative, but I don't care...

To me that's a drop in the bucket compared to the issue with all the guys that either didn't show or are "keeping their options open". For whatever reason, either they drafted guys that were hard line NCAA guys or the Cats don't have the prestige they did as an organisation 5-6 years ago. Other than Crossman, whom they apparently had a deal with before the draft, the others have all stayed away...Petruzzelli McInnis Krys O'Leary Waite Grant plus guys like Florentino Koopman MacLeod Matheson that turned their backs in recent years.

I'm sure somebody will call me negative, but I don't care... You do tend to be overly negative ... But in this case, I agree completely with you that goaltending has not been well handled over the past few seasons ... I miss the days when we would spend a high pick to get one of the top goalie prospects of the future every few years, and then bring him along under a vet ... We went pretty seemlessly from Crawford to Blanchard to Riopel to Domingue - all either went on to star for us or serve as a major piece of trade bait to get us a championship ... but since then, we have been content to ignore goalies at the draft and hope for a miracle in the mid to late rounds or with FAs ...

Whats Monctons lineup going to look like tonight agaisnt CB? My guess would be 20 among these players: Goal Talbot-Tassi Mann-Dixon Dupre Querry Defense Penney Bornstein Worthen Grenier Gignac Aspirot Lavoie Tesink Dominie Cormier Forwards Cyr MacArthur McKenna Wheatley Vachon Hambly D'arnall Meisenheimer Corson Archibald Crossman Yocum Leischman Weirderer Ramin I would think the Quebec kids all get in with the CEGEP deadline coming quick.

Yeah they've really bungled the goaltending situation recently. I heard they made a push to get into a position where they could draft Baribeau or D'Orio at this past draft. I'm not so sure that ever came close to happening though. The real puzzling thing for me is that they could have taken Bouthillier with their first pick, but they kept trading down and down. Maybe they weren't high on him? You would think they would have liked someone enough to not wait until the 6th round to draft a goalie, which is ridiculous in their current situation. Then to top it all off, as Billy said, they drafted three goalies and there's no guarantee any of them will ever play here. Currently it looks like at this time next year the Cats will be in the exact same situation all over again. I hope they have some sort of plan in place, but they're not inspiring a ton of confidence at the moment.

Matthew Waite, Liam Conrad, Anaud Vachon and Jeremy McKenna have left camp to protect NCAA eligibility.
