Minnesota had many 1st round pick busts over the years. Bouchard was absolutely lethal in junior and had expectations to be top player in the NHL for a long time.
Off the top of my head I can think of Colten Gillies, AJ Thelen who never turned out and Benoit Pouliot who was rushed to the NHL early. The Wild were in a funk for a while with 1st round picks not turning out.

You can take any of the 30 NHL teams and you will find high first round busts amongst all of them. It happens. I would have rather had Sheppard over David Fischer that year.

Minnesota ruined many a prospect in that era. It doesn't change the fact that Sheppard didn't deliver based on his skill set and hype in junior after his huge production at 18. His injury, as others have stated, was sheer stupidity in even being in that scenario. If that happened to say a Leafs prospect, people like you would mock it to no end. But here you are trying to defend it using the logic that Jacques Lemaire is a bad coach and made the decision himself to keep Sheppard when in reality Lemaire was a good coach and Minnesota was making an organizational decision that they made with many others in a similar situation including another bust from the Q in PM Bouchard. You're kidding right? PM Bouchard a bust? Drafted 8th overall in 2002. Sheppard Drafted 9th overall in 2006. 394 games in the NHL for Sheppard, 23 goals, 68 assists 91 points, -38 ... 593 games in the NHL for Bouchard, 110 goals, 246 assists 356 points, +6 ... Yeah, what a bust Bouchard was. 3 50+ point seasons yet he was a bust like Sheppard. LOL and Bouchard had legitimate injury issues that shortened/derailed his career.... multiple concussions suffered while actually playing the game he was paid to play

Sheppard was neither all were busted first rounders in a way.... all were probably rushed to the bigs too early..... only one of them was out of an NHL job at 26 years old

It's pretty standard in Europe to get 1 year deal as an import
