Agree, I'm glad the habs didn't spend huge money on Karlsson, he was never great defensively plus his skating hasn't been the same since he messed up his ankle. I'd rather see them spend on Panarin, plus he'll likely come in cheaper. With Montreal there would have been no cap issues for at least a couple of years by signing Karlsson.... adding him now to a stable of promising young forwards and Weber/Price still productive veterans would have been a great move.... I find it laughable when supposed Habs fans are happy a guy that was seriously rumoured to be interested in signing here doesn't.... yet at the same time suggest someone who has shown no inclination towards Montreal would be a great signing..... oh well I don’t see any way where signing a guy who looks to be in decline to a ridiculous contract as a good move. I doubt he was never interested in Montreal or Ottawa, was likely just a ploy by his agent to accelerate SJ’s clock to get a deal done. Panarin nearly signed with Montreal when he left Russia, it was between Chicago and Montreal back then.

With that signing SJ is getting really top heavy. Teams that win usually have depth, look at who St.Louis had on their 3rd and 4th lines. San Jose almost beat St. Louis even with all the injuries though. If thats your comparison those teams could play 20 times and each win 10. There is no magic formula. In fact...i'd go as far to say that you'd of been the first to mock others who would have suggested Bozak and Bouwmeester being perfect depth on a contender. Why would I mock Bozak and Bouwmeester as depth guys?

Montreal's biggest immediate needs are top 4 blueliner or legit top 2 center
Not saying Panarin wouldn't be a nice add... he would be.... just making a golaie and a winger your top two paid players is not really a recipe for success in todays NHL
plus the Habs are loaded on the wings already

Top 4 d-man may be UFA or trade. I don’t see a big need at center the way Domi and Danault took big steps forward last year, plus JKK looking like a #1 or 2 guy in the pretty short term. They also have Poehling plus maybe Suzuki arriving, one or both may have to play wing. IMO adding a center would not be good use of ressources.

Philly signs Kevin Hayes to a 7 year/$7.14 per year deal.. absolutely huge money and Matt Duchene’s eyes probably just bugged out of his head after seeing it.

I'll give it the same time frame I see Vigneault having there: 3 years. $7.14 for a guy who hit 20 goals once and 50 points once who is in his prime seems a bit much to me. I guess the alternative for teams looking for C's is pay more for a Duchene (my pick if I had the choice) or over pay for a Kadri with a better contract for 3 more seasons. This is one of those "we're all glad MY team didn't do that" deals. But there's lots of time left for our teams to drive us crazy, too.

Agree, I like Hayes, but he didn't move the needle much in Winnipeg this year. Pretty steep to pay him almost 10% of your cap. Phillie has a lot of young guys who will need extensions very soon...things will get tight in part thanks to overpaying Hayes. They just bought out MacDonald and replaced him with a contract just as bad.

Well nobody should be surprised a guy gets overpaid as a UFA..... Hayes is fairly consistent tho ..... this might not be as bad a deal as everyone thinks... they aren't in any cap hell yet anyhow....
this is nowhere near as bad a signing as Andrew MacDonald was
now in some ridiculous this is even a thing news..... essentially retired David Clarkson had to submit a no trade list to Vegas..... this is a loophole that has to be fixed..... you shouldn't really be allowed to trade a guy who is never going to play again... let alone the team that does it then being able to trade his contract again the next year

Clarkson being on the book means that's less money being paid to a player because insurance is paying his contract out so a team just accepts the cap hit and pays out no real dollars. Loophole to get to the cap floor and should have been dealt with in the last CBA. There's gotta be a way to remove those really long term guys from the cap equation...like after not playing in a season you're just cap exempt for cap floor purposes.
