Surprised nobody has started this thread yet..... i know there was a big parade yesterday but something else pretty significant happened as well
some Karlsson guy resigned with San Jose...... 8 years 11.5 mil per (approximately)..... really was hoping to see a big free agent frenzy for his services.... dunno how San Jose keeps making these moves year after year after year
then Trouba was dealt from Winnipeg to NY Rangers for Pionk and a first in this years draft.... great trade IMO... another guy i would have liked to see Montreal try and land but oh well
other minor move i saw recently..... Olli Maata to Chicago for Kahun....

Last few playoffs Karlsson has broken down health wise. That's the only reason i'm somewhat surprised at that contract. AAV is spot on....the term somewhat surprises me though. And do they role with the high cap hits on all the D or look to move a Vlasic? Cap just keeps going up makes sticking with what you have a lot easier.
Like that Trouba deal for NYR too. 20th pick and Pionk is solid value for them. I find Winnipeg kind of botched that whole situation and should have hit a home run with that asset a couple of years back.

Pavelski can probably get more on the free market now... but maybe he takes a discount to stay and keep plugging at trying to win with this group..... it's guys like Dillon, Braun, Melker Karlsson who might have to be sacrificed to make it all work ... and Nyquist will certainly not be offered a deal to come back.... looking at cap friendly they have 12.5 million in cap space right now Meier will need a big raise Labanc could be moved Donskoi, Pavelski, Thornton..... as UFA's

Don’t like the trade for the Jets. I don’t think Pionk and 20th overall is enough value for a player of Trouba’s caliber. I’m guessing they look at it as a rental though type player though, he likely wouldn’t resign next year with the Jets and worst case scenario for the Rangers, they can’t resign him and flip him at the deadline for a very similar return. Low risk, high upside move for the Rangers and bad asset management by the Jets IMO.
Karlsson deal is a long time for a 28 year old that hasn’t quite looked the same as he did before injuries sort of struck him. The money is on par but 8 years is something they’ll probably come to regret... although, this could be a situation where they figure they’ll get enough out of him early on to justify the move and just live with the last season or two on the back end when he’s likely way overpaid.

Winnipeg had like 2 years notice on Trouba not wanting to be here long term. They held on to him to try and win. At some point you need to use your assets to try and win so its hard to call it bad asset management when it's a player they were trying to win with while approaching his UFA date in 2020. Especially where they almost reached the Finals last year it made a ton of sense to keep everyone for another run.

the pick they got back was their own first so it's really a rental Kevin Hayes and Neal Pionk for an RFA Jacob Trouba.....
least they were smart enough to get a pick by moving Hayes early.... albeit it likely never becomes much of an asset

Agree, I'm glad the habs didn't spend huge money on Karlsson, he was never great defensively plus his skating hasn't been the same since he messed up his ankle. I'd rather see them spend on Panarin, plus he'll likely come in cheaper.

I would have loved Montreal to acquire him.... he could shoot whatever way he likes.... he's a helluva defenseman just entering into his prime... Rangers got him for a steal

Teams that win usually have depth, look at who St.Louis had on their 3rd and 4th lines.

If thats your comparison those teams could play 20 times and each win 10. There is no magic formula. In fact...i'd go as far to say that you'd of been the first to mock others who would have suggested Bozak and Bouwmeester being perfect depth on a contender.

Assemble the best roster now. Ask questions later. I like it, honestly. At some point teams need to take a step forward and it can't always come by waiting for players to develop.

With Montreal there would have been no cap issues for at least a couple of years by signing Karlsson.... adding him now to a stable of promising young forwards and Weber/Price still productive veterans would have been a great move.... I find it laughable when supposed Habs fans are happy a guy that was seriously rumoured to be interested in signing here doesn't.... yet at the same time suggest someone who has shown no inclination towards Montreal would be a great signing..... oh well
