so is this Bergevin's worst early summer off season as GM? you clear out cap space you already had to be an active player in the free agent frenzy market you sign a minor leaguer and a backup goalie.... and put together an offer sheet that doesn't come close to forcing Carolina's hand meanwhile every possible target to add scoring is signed elsewhere.... now you're sitting with even more capspace you haven't used the last 2 years effectively..... and egg on your face hoping somebody will be desperate and trade you what you need if you'll take on a dead contract with it? lots of time to redeem yourself but your not in any of your colleague's good books right now....... the free agent market is extremely dried up..... at least you have 30 picks to make in front of your hostile home crowd next June i guess they should have made a better offer sheet..... or targetted Point instead....... So you'd rather see him pay ridiculous money to a Duchene or Panarin? The only negative is, he's pissed off some GM's for sure. It was worth a try, they obviously had inside info on Dundon's finances. We have no idea how close or not it came. Carolina talks a good game on TV but that’s just PR. They obviously won’t come out and say…ouf, we almost let him walk because of all the up front cash… I find it comical that people were railing for a rebuild for years, now they do one and people complain that MB isn’t signing terrible contracts as a short cut. The group of 25 and under in the organisation is the best the Habs have had since the mid 80’s. Domi(23) Drouin(23) Danault(25) JKK(19) Mete(20) in the NHL Juulsen(21) Poehling(20) Suzuki(20) Brook(20) Fleury(21) Primeau(20) Evans(22) arriving soon Also 10 picks in 2019, 11 in 2018 plus 12 coming in 2020. I’d rather not sign big UFA’s than give them ridiculous money and be trying to buy them out in 1 or 2 years while trying to extend young players. I would have liked Lee but at 7M x 7 he could be Andrew Ladd in 3-4 years. I prefer the slow and steady approach, last year the team got younger AND better. Yes i absolutely would rather him pay his rich owners money on proven veterans with a scoring track record than sit for a 3rd straight year as a non cap team in one of the most storied and successful markets in the game... i honestly can't believe any Habs fan wouldn't rather that the rest of your nonsense isn't stuff i am arguing about...... adding a couple of big names by free agency doesn't change any of the prospects you list or their ages.... i've actually argued for years (you just fail to accept it) that instead of adding depth bottom tier dmen or forwards and then resigning every single one of them.. often to multi year deals..... let the prospects cut their teeth in that bottom sheltered minutes on cheap contracts to allow your team to overpay on an extra top star or two

Just to match what Duchene got in Nashville, it would have been over 10M. So realistically to get him to sign here you’re talking 11M per year… www.capfriendly.com/income-tax-calculator/10100000/canadiensThe depth guys they sign carry very little to no risk. Signing 5 guys for 1M has zero risk but one guy to 5M has definite risk. The low cap guys can be buried with no impact on the cap. Prospects are better off playing 20 minutes a game in the AHL than 10-12 in the NHL on a 4th line. Let them make the jump once they can thrive, not just survive.

I for one am glad he didn’t over spend on free agents, I have no problem being patient and building slowly through the draft! We have a great youth movement happening and I’d like MB to continue his patient approach, I would’ve LOVED to have Aho at 8.5 mil/year but whatever. I’d love to contend before Price gets too old but over paying for free agents isn’t the way to win anymore. You have to win while your talent is still young once they get making 9+ million a year your chances of winning a cup are less likely. The leafs window to win is closed because they will have 3 players among over 10 million a year 😂😂😂

Not a home run, but a solid double, will help the top 4. Big bruiser who moves the puck pretty well.

What would it take for the Habs to acquire Jesse Puljujarvi from the Oilers? I think he could be an improvement given an opportunity with a new team, thoughts?
