J.T is probably the safe choice for Captain .......he was even before this . Morgan Rielly is my guy for Captain. Listening to him speak to the media, his play on the ice and the fact he’s been around through it all, just makes it an easy decision for me to name him Captain.

I would give it to Tavares, the overpaid kids don’t need the extra stress. They will be hard pressed to live up to their contracts so why add more.....?

People obsess over the C. I just don't have the interest as I find it completely over-rated.
The Sharks have had 3-4 captains with Joe Thornton there. Another new one this year. Doesn't make Thornton or other vets on the team any less of veterans or leaders.
For some reason in Toronto they act like the C is going to add 15 lbs and 10 goals to whoever gets it. Just doesn't work that way.
I almost prefer to not have one to avoid the distraction completely for whoever is going to get it in that market.

Did it elsewhere and basically lives the life they all preach the captain needs to live in terms of preparation and production. Also leaves the kids be kids, which they clearly still are, and gives them something else to attain to be in the future. Rielly would be in that mix too. Especially since he may have to eat a lower cap hit to stay long term in 2 years.

Unless you have a super young team needing leadership, it’s not a huge issue. In a big market though, you have to be careful, the C is very “heavy” and some guys it impacts them negatively. Pacioretty is an example. In Toronto it’s more about choosing someone where it won’t be uncomfortable for that player.

As it is he and Babcock have been at odds over ice time for at least 2 years now. Having guys like Marleau around was supposed to help these guys grow up and understand the responsibilities of being elite players in a big market. Seems like that was a flop.

Tavares is the one guy who if you give it to him it likely changes absolutely nothing about how he plays or handles the off ice stuff. Not much seems to rattle him. And he keeps his pants on.

That he had a face to face with Babcock and potentially said nothing really says a lot about how much he trusts those in a position of power in the franchise and makes them all look bad in a way. Because after 3 years there should be some trust. And this proves there really isn't any.

He seems to mostly avoid attention off the ice(apparently unless drunk 😊). He also seems to not have a great relationship with the franchise, I think Babcock was out to see him 2 summers ago also. I would not be surprised to see him hit UFA and go to a small market US team like Gardiner(Arizona if they still have a team).
