Ovechkin passed Lemieux and tied Yzerman for tenth all-time in goals. Safe to say he hasn't been a bust. You're really going out on a limb there...

They used to say Ovi was a "one trick pony".
If your one trick in the NHL is scoring goals I cant see how that is a bad thing:)
It wasnt even a true comment. He also can hit which even while not as heralded in todays game it certainly affects the play when done right.
People will debate the eras. He did pass Lemieux and Lemieux had a shortened career. Is it harder or easier to score goals today than when the people he is passing played? You can debate it either way, but I believe the best pool of goaltending the NHL has ever had. And the way teams play defense is better. The players are coming from a wider talent pool all around the world.
In the late 80s if a team had 3.25 GAA that was heralded as elite. Today the great goalies are well below 2 goals per game average.
And the video has made the game better and harder to play both from a coaching perspective.

Hating on him and Crosby is just what people have done for 15 years. It was stupid 15 years ago and even more now that they're headed to the Hall Of Fame as 2 of the greatest to ever play. If Ovechkin was Canadian people like Don Cherry would have celebrated his success to no end. The era thing is a loaded question though. The open style currently seen resembles the 80's style more then anything from 1995 through 2010 or so which was very hard to watch at times. Fact is that across any era the greats stand out. And Ovechkin is great. I hope he passes Gretzky just to put some of Gretzky's greatness into perspective....and to show how great Ovechkin is. Gretzky had a 92 goal season...Ovechkin will never come close to that yet likely breaks the record anyway which show how dominant he's been for his entire career. Gretzky was a shell of himself his final 5 years or so which tells you how amazing he was in his 20's.

Ovechkin seems like a really good person too. Like when he's playing and celebrating the spotlight is on him, but when it comes to donating or community work he keeps quiet. It's very telling that he does things like that with the right attitude.
And for his game, look at his backchecking now. He used to be so lazy defensively but he's really expanded on that game.

I think he is the greatest goal scorer the NHL has ever seen..... whether he gets Gretzky's record or not
He still scores on the one timer from his favorite position even tho every team/goalie knows it's coming..... they simply cant stop it

Not sure about the good person part...he supports Putin who kills opposition and journalists who say anything bad bout him. He could be a guy who stands up for those that have no voice, but chooses not to.

When you factor in that teams scored about 25-40% (depending on the year) more goals during that era, its not even close. I think he would have to play to 41 (6 more season) and average around 30 goals a year to catch Gretzky. definitely possible.

We can say that backchecking comment about several players younger in their careers. Usually when u get older we might not notice it but great players learn to play different and be more effective while learning to conserve energy and still contribute when not in a position to score. Ovi used to have really long shifts. Its unsustainable. But his ability to manage shifts now is a plus. And they have the guys to support him. One of the things that really opened my eyes about him was in 2010 when he was the Russian Sochi ambassador for 2014 he had to stay in Vancouver until the closing ceremonies which were on a Sunday night on the west coast. His team had been eliminated about 5 days before. The next day at 10:30 am Washingtom time he was on the ice for morning skate practice with his team. He took a red eye from Vancouver-Seattle-Chicago - to DC so he could be back in time for work again. The NHL had been shut down for Olympics. Reporters asked him why push himself to be back so fast. His team was 1st overall at the time. And his answer: "I havent been skating for almost a week. I need to be ready". Wasnt lazy. He has had mentors and people give him good direction and bad direction. Adam Oates had him play the other wing one year and he was nominated accidentally as an all-star at both LW and RW. He isnt/wasnt a coach killer. Any more than any great player the onus is on a coach to make them succeed. Crosby has had about the same number of coaches as Ovi. Only Crosby had his success early with Therien, Bylsma and then again with Sully. Ovi had Hanlon, Bruce Boudreau, Hunter for 1/2 a year, Oates, Trotz and now Reirden. There are NHL franchises that have had as many coaches in Ovis last 7 years.

Some interesting names on that list. Georgiev being one given Lindqvist is near the end of his career.

One team that did a face plant this year who was expected to contend is San Jose. They seem to have gotten old in a hurry. Ever team has players over 30 signed and that in itself is not a problem, but SJ seems to think everybody is a Thornton or Marleau.
Here is the money on 30+ guys they have going forward…
Burns(34) 5 more years at 8M Vlasic(32) 6 more years at 7M Karlsson(29) 7 more years at 11.5M(will be 30 on May 31) Jones(30) 4 more years at 5.75M Couture(30) 7 more years at 8M
Plus Kane…(28) 5 more years at 7M(will be 30 in 19 months)
Wilson has a history of “retooling” on the fly and getting back to contention. Will be interesting to see but they will need a bit more young legs.

Are there any dates finalized for Seattle to name team/coaches/ logo/colors?? I would imagine logo and colors will be revealed at the expansion draft, coaches at any time but likely closer to their season starting. They may save the team name reveal for the expansion draft as well. As for anything official, I don't think they announced a timeline.
