i'm not arguing last year... i fully agree it was a writeoff and the best time to have such a rotten team because of short season and covid
and i'm not advocating spending foolishly on free agents when you aren't in position to contend
but i don't agree with nickel and diming the big league club when you are a big market which the Sox are..... and they rake in big dollars off the backs of their extremely loyal diehard followers
How are they nickle and diming?
They are just under the Luxury Tax cap(205M), 2nd only to the Dodgers(
www.spotrac.com/mlb/tax/
When you're retooling, it makes no sense to be above, you end up paying up to 100% tax plus at certain thresholds it costs draft picks and International signing pool money. The big markets go over for 2-3 years then back under to "reset" the penalties.
I would be pissed off if I was a fan of a team owner taking in the money from big market teams and pocketing it. Pittsburgh Cleveland Baltimore Miami etc.
im not going to pretend i follow baseball salaries or their system nearly close enough to have much of a debate on this shit with anyone let alone someone who sees things only one way like you do..... but that link you provided answers your own question..... they are allegedly paying 32.5 million for their former stars to play elsewhere.... and what top prospects did they get as a result?
they let a homegrown superstar go rather than pay him...... ironically enough to the dodgers of all teams
these are things a big market team in baseball should not be forced to do...... the sox do it regularly
as for draft picks.... baseball draft picks don't mean that much to me..... you can easily land talent late in the mlb draft...... or as a big market team you let the prospects develop elsewhere and then outbid everyone in free agency down the road lol
