Where did you read that? The last I had heard, they were going to have everyone in the bubble, visiting team and home team. I believe the initial plan called for the Jays to not be quarantined each time they went a road trip, which was an obvious non-starter, but they quickly moved off of that. Not saying it is a bad decision by the Feds - but whatever the final plan the Jays proposed must have at least been somewhat feasible to have the province and city sign off on it. I believe the biggest concern at least from the media statements were that the Jays were playing games in the US in areas of high risk transmission (most cities in the US) and then coming back to Canada www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-baseball-bluejays/canada-government-rejects-blue-jays-plan-to-play-in-toronto-over-covid-19-fears-idUSKCN24J0TRYeah the constant in and out of the bubble means there really is no bubble. The Jays could be flying back from Tampa while the Yankees fly in from Philadelphia and all stay in Rogers Center and infect each other. There were also some concerns about how to police visiting players I believe after Shaw's comments about not staying in a bubble all summer. Jays were threatened 750K and potential jail time. Both far fetched and not realistic but meant to try and prove the point.

So Pennsylvania dept of health wont let blue Jay's play in Pittsburgh.
Ironic. However Pennsylvania and many of the populated northern states have been more like Canada regarding travel in and out.

Buffalo it is ... interesting to see the player reaction ... the young guys seem to be taking it well - tell us when and where and we will play ... the older guys are grumbling about it being a non-MLB park. Jays seem to have some impressive young leaders (Bichette, Biggio, Jansen, etc.). There are a couple of the older vets who frankly seem to be underperforming malcontents ... something to keep an eye on, may need to clear out a few of them sooner rather than later if they end up being a poisonous influence on the kids.

Season wasn't even 24 hours old and Montoyo was talking about the lack of pitching he had available for Saturday with a 30 man roster after 4 relievers combined to pitch 4 1/3 innings.
Fast forward to Monday and what should have been a 3-0 start is a 1-2 debacle where multiple relievers didn't look like MLB caliber pitchers.
The starting pitching certainly showed some potential to be very good after being god awful last year so that's a big positive.
But you can't win without a bullpen.
Part of me has felt this will be a lost season the minute they got kicked out of their home stadium and I think the pitching will clearly do them in but the lineup has a ton of potential to be exciting down the road. But I think the interest I have in this season is about gone already.

Yamaguchi may be a lost cause, he's shown very little to be excited about. That Giles inning was not Giles, he's hurting now. Normally he is a guaranteed save and had 2 outs before he lost his arm. Of course this would be a bad loss if he's out for a while. Jays always suck against TB and like you said, they could have won all 3 and should have won 2 out of 3. It's a bit too early to give up on the season yet lol. However, regarding the whole league - I don't know if this will last. Injuries seem to be occurring all over, and every day there are reports of players having COVID worries. I would be shocked if they get to playoffs without some serious issues coming up.

Other sports going right to end of season/playoffs combined with it being the dead of summer make it hard for me to say i'll spend much time watching them at this point. They're all fighting for viewers within the next 7 days. A hot start can catch the attention of fans and maybe keep them engaged in the product. The team complaining about depth after 1 game that was a pretty standard opener for a starter going 5 innings or so while you have an expanded roster kind of blew me away. Then I seen Yamamguchi and heard them talk about how he can't/won't even throw his best pitch and add in how awful Gaviglio looked and Giles blowing out his arm and the bullpen situation looks like a mess. The starters/long guys all deserved wins based on their performances. But you can't have that much lack of faith in a bullpen and expect to have success.

They were one inning away from taking two of three as road team against one of the pre-season favourites ... it is too soon to panic. Without having had much in the way of pre-season, they are still figuring out roles for relievers ... there are plenty of options, and some will step up and earn bigger roles, others will falter and see their roles fade. I know it is a condensed season, but I still think it will take a couple of weeks for Montoyo and company to figure out who they can count on out of the pen.

First off, this isn't bias from the weekend. Back in March I wondered how they were going to be able to bridge the gap between the starters and Giles closing the game out. I just have a hard time seeing the Jays hold leads late in ball games. Days when the starter only gives you 5 quality innings are going to be hard to get through.
Now with Giles injured it adds another inning of question marks. The game has changed and you need a deep bullpen and multiple closer calibre studs to be successful.
Everything is positive as long as the young guys keep improving like they are. Jays are still a year away and being in the mix this year would be a bonus.

I just know i've never heard a manager complain about the depth of his pitching staff in the first series of a season. There were some positives (Shoemaker, Hatch, Romano) but they were outweighed by Gaviglio and Yamaguchi looking awful. And in a short season where you're playing the AL/NL East there's little room for error. I'm not panicking necessarily. I am saying that the overall interest after a series like that will hurt when NBA/NHL start later this week and the Jays home opener is in Washington. Add the COVID factor and MLB might become part time viewing for even hardcore MLB fans within the week.

They barely even had a spring training besides a few 5 inning scrimmage games. Charlie Morton who was one of the better pitchers last year had his velocity down 6 MPH and got rocked. I don't really think any of these pitchers are in any kind of peak form. The main benefit I saw was getting Vladdy into situations at 1st base so he could learn the game. Seeing mistakes from him was great in an "asterisk" season as he could learn in a situation with much less pressure but still in meaningful games. Now he likely goes another year without any meaningful baseball.

Then he got rocked. They told us repeatedly that Yamguchi can't throw his best pitch due to not liking the MLB baseball. Then he got rocked. And yeah starters aren't stretched out yet and guys like Snell are nowhere near their best stuff but relievers shouldn't be in mid Spring form right now. They should at least have their pitches down. I can't understand how Yamaguchi is on the roster if he can't throw his splitter and everyone is well aware of it. Can I get 1/4 of the guys salary back if he can't throw 1 of his 4 pitches?

Which the starting staff is, no doubt. But considering it was literally one of the worst starting staffs of all time it would have been hard to repeat it. Oh and the other guy might be the best overall PBP man in North American pro sports. It's a pleasure to listen to Dan Shulman call any event.

Add Pearson to the rotation next week ... that frees up Hatch and Kay to pitch out of the pen ... Font should be back at some point ... then clear out the dead weight ...

I’m actually surprised about some of the takes here. I do agree that the bullpen has some major question marks in it. What I did see this weekend actually was Montoyo in ability to manage. I’m not going to dump on Gavigilo but he wasn’t the picture for that situation. Sam is the guy you throw out there to eat innings when the starters can’t get past the 2nd. Putting him in a high leverage situation was a poor decision on Charlie’s part. Yamaguchi was available and sure he ended up getting the loss yesterday I thought he pitched okay. They hit good pitches. Now I will give Charlie a pass on that Decision because he choices were Limited anyways.
Game 3 however is a different story. When the team is up by 2 and a short season like this every game counts. I love Vlady and hope he becomes a monster but with the inexperience of the position and a solid glove in Shaw on the bench you have to pull him in the situation. Sure you might hurt Vladys feelings but he’s only been playing the position for 3 weeks now and that mistake he made which is not going to be on the game sheet was the play that cost the game. Also give Giles 2 to many batters doesn’t help but if Vlady goes to first which Rowdy and Shaw would know to do they win that game. Walker should and maybe did say something to Montoyo and Giles shouldn’t have throw a pitch once the bases were loaded.
Am I saying they need to fire him. No this isn’t the season to do so. But if he continues to make bad managerial decisions I don’t think he gets next season. This season if it goes any further with the marlins stuff going on right now that is, is a season that will show team’s strengths and weaknesses fast.
