Just spitballing an idea here. Let’s say it’s true 13th and 18th are traded but it’s to move up in the draft. Moncton packages Vincent Filion, 13th overall and 18th overall to Rimouski for 5th overall. Thoughts? Maybe I wasn't just spitballing.... I will gladly accept Filion and 13th for 5th overall.

I think Filion likely has a bit more value than some Cats fans are giving him credit for. That said if packaging him with a late first gets us #5 in the draft, I think that it is a good deal.

I think we’ll be adding a 2nd next year to the deal

Come on guys there’s no way in hell this is the trade. Think what makes more sense Rimouski will give the 5th overall pick for a backup goalie who has been in the league for 3 years and only has 26 wins. Next even with the 13th involved with said trade it’s not happening. The only way the 5th is involved here is you give both the 13th and 18th and Filion is a throw In here. Still not happening.
Let’s look at it rationally because no one did that yet. Why has no one went wait Rimouski has the 20th pick which is considered a first rounder this year. After looking at everything I said about Filion what seems more likely? A trade that involves Filion and the 5th overall pick or the 20th overall pick?
A realistic trade is
Rimouski 20th overall For Moncton Filion and pick 52
I know Rimouski needs a goalie but they’re not giving the 5th overall pick for a guy who has done nothing to warrant even being a first rounder himself. Think about it he has lost his spot to a free agent from Ontario. The guy from Ontario wasn’t even good enough to get drafted in the OHL. Also what makes more sense from Rimouski stand point? Pick 5th give 20th pick for a goalie they hope turns it around for 2 years. Honestly the fact you are looking at the 20th pick is huge.

The 20th pick could also be an option ... thanks for pointing that out. Obviously Filion on his own doesn't fetch the 5th ... throw in the 13th, is that enough? Probably not ... add another pick (for example a 2024 2nd) - probably close. Filion has not developed as projected, but he lost his job because Steinman was very good - drafted in the OHL or not - he wouldn't be the first guy they missed. Filion would not be the first goalie to come into his own at 19 and 20 after getting off to a slow start. In fact, it is not that many goalies who manage to establish themselves as bonafide #1's prior to their 19 year old season, although admittedly the 2004 goalie class seems strong - a number of good goalies who started as 18 year olds last year ... I suspect more than a normal year. Filion could still be a good bounceback, buy low candidate for a team in need of a goalie.

He has been a mediocre backup player and they’re getting a 1st for him is huge. My whole point is the 5th overall pick is crazy to think that’s the trade. The 20th makes so much more sense of it’s a first round at all. You said it yourself he’s a bounce back guy. If someone is a bounce back they usually don’t get a first round pick not to mention a 5th overall pick.

So Filion to move up 8 spots.

Unfortunately I haven't been scouting because life has gotten in the way, so I have no idea what the difference is between 5 and 13 when it comes to the draft. some years that's a huge gap and some years it's not so much. I think when you're talking about a pick like that, you're waiting until draft day, because whether or not you value the #5 or #13 pick will often depend on if the guy you want is still there. If Rimouski is targeting a player at #5 and he goes at #4... then that trade becomes a lot more realistic, or visa-versa if Moncton wants a guy at #5 but he's gone in the first 4, than they might just want to sit on #13. It'll be an interesting draft for the Wildcats for sure tho.

But you’d have to add probably IMO your 3rd rounder.

Filion is a potential two year starter for whoever acquires him ... I did a quick dive of 2004 goalies around the league, the only other comparable in terms of Q experience that might be available for trade would appear to be Ruccia - guys like Gravel, Ciarlo, Rousseau, Mercer, Delafontaine, Fleming are unlikely to be available ... Miller and St. Hilaire both had good stats in small samples as rookie backups on powerhouse teams this year - likely not available as both seem poised to inherit the net on a rebuilding team next season. So supply/demand likely raises the price somewhat.
Looking at the various possible returns from Riki: 1) 5th overall straight up - not happening 2) Filion and #13 for #5 - to me that seems to favour the Cats 3) Filion, #13, and #18 for #5 - to me that is too much, favours Riki 4) Filion, #13, 2024 pick (say 2nd or 3rd - maybe even some conditions) for #5 - seems about right 5) #20 straight up - maybe, seems a bit rich for Riki 6) Filion and a 2024 pick for #20 - seems about right
All of the above simply to illustrate that there is the basis of a potential deal to be made involving Filion and picks for either of Riki's first rounders IMO. Will be interesting to see what happens.
