Thankfully there was a more pressing hockey game on tonight that I was able to watch. But from what I seen flicking back and forth, it was a pretty one sided affair.
I just don't get the line juggling, I can't keep track of it anymore. Switching back and forth between games it was hard to follow who was playing with who.
I just watched the highlight reel, Ruccia looked solid.

Question for anyone with more knowledge on coaching - is this a school of thought? Are there coaches looking to move past the idea of rolling 4 lines and looking at it more fluidly? Or is this just Goyens not being satisfied with what he sees and just rolling dice until he is?

in junior hockey i have seen very few coaches truly roll 4 lines
if your a 4th liner in junior you're lucky if you get more than a handful of shifts

And if you think about it...thats how it mostly will always be. With an even spread everyone gets 15 minutes of ice time. Add 4-5 PP's per team and suddenly the top guys are closer to 22-24 minutes and the PK guys not far off. But that means you're already down to only 6-8 minutes or so for a 4th line. Which is probably realistically what we mostly see happen.

You don't need to roll 4 lines, but on home ice you should be able to get them into the game and get them some sort of an identity on the ice. It's tougher on the road, but the Cats managed to roll their 4th, twice as much as ours last night. The 22-24 mins for a top line is more like 25+ for the Eagles, problem being is many of those are in puck retrieval not puck possession.

In a game with 13 PP's when you're down from 8 minutes in for 52 minutes until the game ends you're not always going to be able to get a 4th line into the game in terms of regular ice time. Its more realistic to think a specific player may move around the lineup based on the situation (4th liner takes a shift on line 1 or 2 after a PP for example) but in some games in this league its impossible to get the 4th line regular time when there's so many special teams. You also have coaching and management both preaching playoffs and now is the time to ride those veterans and try and get those points...some of those vets are only in this league (especially the overagers) because they're not necessarily elite possession guys. 25+ minutes for a top line with 2 overagers in a post Xmas game with 8 PP's against a division rival just seems like a normal bench rotation in a junior hockey game to me.

It might seem normal, but when you are dominated shift after shift it hardly looks normal. One of 2 things happen with those types of minutes when you have limited possession and that includes skating the full length of the ice 2-3 times on each of the 8 PPs, you loose offensive ops due to fatigue or you cheat on the defensive side.
Eagles had 4 F over 20 mins last night...Cats had no one.
Labelle who I absolutely love btw, 20 year old first line center.. rarely plays over 20 mins a night..he plays 17-19 mins the right way, +11 , ppg player.
