Kilfoil looked very good. Good for the Moose to lock him up! Watched the game, but any comments on the Islanders would be greatly appreciated! Lane Hinkley is going to be a problem this year. He looks like put on some more weight because he's a very strong kid, notably overpowering opposing players in any sort of physical battle. Other than that it was hard to really notice much, it was garbage hockey for 2 periods lol. Like, if last years playoff run was a party, than this game was the morning after where everyone is hung over and nobody wants to get out of bed. Bickle should have had the Kilfoil shot, there was definitely some rust from the long ceremony and nerves from playing for his new team, but... after that he was pretty okay, not that the Mooseheads actually tested him much. Owen Conrad looked great, for it being his first QMJHL game he was pretty outstanding. Him and Kearsey going forward for the next 3-4 seasons is going to be really fun for Charlottetown fans.

As I said in my previous post, that was pretty garbage hockey for 2 periods, but it was to be expected given the age of these teams and the length of that ceremony.
That said, I was so glad to be back at the rink I didn't really care.
Positives for tonight -
Milner held it together for the most part. He was shaky early and really fighting the puck out there, but he settled in as the game went along. I didn't look at either of the goals against as like "Oh, he should have had that", The first goal was a funny bounce and a wicked wrister off a bouncing puck, hard to blame him for that, that's such a hard read and it was perfectly placed.
The second he had no chance on, he came out to challenge the shot from the slot, but Campbell partially fanned on the shot, and the puck just rolled to Horth who was completely uncovered at the side of the net. That scenario beats most goalies most times, doesn't matter how good you are.
Liam Kilfoil was better than advertised, he might have been the best Mooseheads forward tonight. If he plays like he did tonight and progresses as the season goes on, he might actually have a 35 point year as a rookie.
Speaking of progression, Logan Crosby was the pleasant surprise of the night. He earned that second star honor, it was probably his best game as a Moosehead. The work he put in over the summer is paying off, he's physical and he's creating plays, exactly what we need from him this year.
Lou Levesque stood out too, what an excellent penalty killer, his speed just makes him right at home in this league, he's a total pest and he makes life difficult for the opposition.
On the negative side, Vidicek was not really noticeable at all...
Ponzetto... he had that one chance off a one-timer that seemed to wake him up, but god he cannot lead a pass to save his life. He has NO IDEA how to put the puck where someone is going to be, he's always a good 5-10 feet off. I want to clarify, Ponzetto definitely has talent, he's a good skater, he's 6'01", he can play hockey, I'm waiting for him to adjust more to the north american game, but tonight he was again, frustrating to watch.
Fournier also had a lot of good scoring chances that he just couldn't capitalize on. He once again feels like he'd be fine as a 18 year old returning player, but as a 20 you expect a little more.

Welp can only hope they have a better game tonight, get to the net early, Charlottetown will be going with their Latvian Goalie Ozols, and this should be Milners start again.

Crosby had a good game but overall I just don't see much progression. His skating is the same, his puck skills and decision making looks a lot like the last two years. Could still be a late bloomer but I have my doubts. Please put Fontaine with better players. He's extremely smart and processes the game very well for a rookie. He should 100% be ahead of Welsh, Todd and Levesque. I like Levesque though. Definitely a piece for the future. Good mid rd pick. Need to hit on those once in a while.

I agree put Fontaine with peitzche and Kilfoil, they had good chemistry together and each had 4 shots and kilfoil with the goal , thought vidicek and Fournier were quite stale , ponzetto is going to need some work before he falls to the 4th line , but it was his first game in front of 10000 people we can cut him slack .

I really liked Levesque. Very fast but not very big. I was surprised he seemed to get more playing time than Fontaine. I thought Todd was surprisingly good as well, seeing the little bit of time he played last season.

Screw it, put Levesque and Fontaine together on the third line and MacPhee on the wing, Todd can play 4C, both Lev and Font have solid attributes to share.
Just need Peitzsche and Ponzetto to have better games.
I wouldn’t expect much change in lineup tonight, probably run the same four lines, maybe Bent chips in and Moser chips out. (Or Welsh) Milner in nets.
The lines will be real interesting when Cataford and Dumais are back.
I think we won’t have much issue with D this season, thought Eddy Doyle looked decent. #15 Dominic MacKenzie brought the momentum late in that contest last night, had me on the edge of my seat thought he was going to score lol

Crosby got to play second line the whole game he really started to click with Kilfoil and Levesque late in the game . His game will only improve with consistent playing time it’s all building confidence in these young guys ! I really like are core of young talent going forward flipping Dumais and Furlong this year and adding to that core would do wonders for are future ! Looking at how Rou. built their team is classic how you do it The Moose are in a position of playing catch up with very little to play with other than futures the smart money would be to build for next year when the Q hosts the memorial cup .

Game reminded me some of the last two preseason games… a little quiet and not much going on early but stepped it up late a generated some chances.
Fontaine will be fine and he’ll play with a lot more skilled players once Cataford and Dumais return. He reminds me of a poor man’s Vidicek in some ways. Smart player, mature beyond his age with a burst of skill now and then.
Kilfoil was great and had as good of a game as any he had in the preseason. Not saying we want him in the top 6 in March but it doesn’t look like he’ll be out of place up in the lineup when the opportunity arises.
Crosby showed some positive signs, probably his most involved game as a Moose. Levesque, especially if his offensive game develops at this level, could be quite the home run pick.
I’m starting to like Todd more, looks much more effective of a player. Good energy and intensity, would be nice if he was a bigger guy.
I like how a lot of the youth looked and hopefully we see a couple more find the back of the net tonight and more of a 60 minute game.

Overall we weren’t Terrible for a young team missing the nhl guys, Milner had a rough night , that’s there full team this won’t happen again once all are here , thought Crosby was good again , Shultz and morovic were good on the back end , ponzetto another rough night , kilfoil not noticeable this evening , Todd played quite well just needs some minutes , thought Peitche was the best player tonight lots of chances carrying the puck and I think 3-4 blocked shots .

As much as the forwards are missed it will be nice to have their D pairings settled as well. Moravec was stabilizing tonight (+1 in a 6-1 loss) but it will be nice to get the crew back. Good to see Doyle get some ice and he actually played pretty solid and was getting pucks to the net.
Mackenzie hasn’t looked out of place two games in. His skating is certainly Q level.
Kilfoil was quieter tonight but Crosby had another really solid game. Last year you could see his skill but it seemed like everything promising was 80% of a brilliant play that showed flashes but it never resulted in anything… and I’m not talking just goals but usually didn’t even provide chances and shots. Two games in he has 7 shots, couple points, looks stronger on his skates and has a lot more drive to his game.
On the not so good. Ponzetto found himself on the 4th line to finish the game. There’s skills and good attributes there but the confidence and intensity, especially in traffic, is really lacking.
Also as other have said, I’d take Fournier as a 3rd line guy as a 18-19 year old but as a 20 year old that we could have used some offensive drive from to start the year, the impact just isn’t there.

Cyril, I usually agree with most of what you post. But I must have been watching a completely different game. Moravec was not bad but seems gassed and doesn't show much energy at all. Shultz was far from good. He was all over the place, leaving zone early, turning puck over numerous times, getting to far up ice and the amount of odd man rushes against them were way too many. He actually was benched for a few shifts in the 3rd I am pretty sure and they even changed up his D pairing to see if that would help him and Phillips. It was not pretty. Milner struggled for sure. Tough spot to be in but this is kind of what he signed up for. Vidi who? Where is he? Wow, he really relies on Dumais or high end talent to get him going. He certainly is not equipped to carry a line even though he is very talented. Enough of the negative though. We obviously know without the 5 guys we are missing, this is not our reality. Crosby was our best player in my mind tonight, and if that's the case which it wont be, we are going to be up sh#t creek without a paddle. I found the wingers really struggled getting the puck out of Dzone. Passes from D were hitting them, yet they would bobble puck and Islanders D did a good job pinching and pressuring them. Young guys played well and are getting great experience early in the year. I really liked Todd as well. I feel he could develop nicely if given some ice time. A little on the small side but seems to be getting the job done so far. Even Welsh was full of piss and vinegar on the Pk and cleared it out twice by himself. Wondering if any of the 5 will be back for next weekend???
