I like the year and AAV, if he keeps scoring at a 30-35 goal per year pace he would be underpaid in 3-4 years once the cap goes up. 53 goals in 123 regular season games.

Would Carter Hart be of interest to Hughes and Co?
Move Allen and go with Montembeault/Hart.

It’s a lot of scratch for 123 games, I would agree with you but it doesn’t come without risk. You may overpay for a few years but hopefully when the team is good, you have a guy scoring close to 40 on a reasonable deal.

There is some risk, but Caufield has scored at every level coming up also. You DO need goals for that type of money as he isn't going to bring a lot defensively, physically. He is underrated as a playmaker.

I would say yes...how much is to be determined, plus it also depends on the price, though not a lot of teams will pay big for goalies. I can't recall anybody recently paying huge in a trade for a goalie. Best case they get a 1st plus a very good prospect IMO. I could see something like: Hart 3rd 2024 Harris 2023 1st 2024 2nd 2023 5th Monty/Primeau Armia(2 years at 3.5M) or Hoffman(1 year at 4.5M)

I much prefer this strategy than using the cap room to overpay guys to come to a rebuilding team. If you can get an asset for Hoffman with retention plus move Edmundson(at 3.5M he is easy to fit in) and then use that cap room to add a couple of players while taking on picks... Armia could also move...but I would look at moving him for a similar contract, maybe a guy needing a fresh start or a higher cap hit with only 1 year left.

Via TSN.
"The Canadiens expect to be able to select a promising prospect with the fifth pick, but Hughes admitted to having some reservations about Russian player Matvei Michkov.
"With the Russians, there's a geopolitical aspect and also questions about their contracts," Hughes said.
Michkov is still under contract with the Kontinental Hockey League’s SKA St. Petersburg for the next three seasons.
"We'll see," Hughes said.
"First, we need to evaluate him as a player and compare him to other available players. Then, we need to do our homework on the other aspects. These are all factors that come into the equation."
