Watched the game last night and saw plenty of good from the young guys. Small recap on each player:
Vidicek looked dominant! He will never be big and strong but man he’s smart and deceptively skilled. He controlled the play when he was out there.
Macphee is a perfect third line centre/right wing. He’s got decent speed, plays with grit and has a great work ethic. If he had better hands around the net he’d be a top 6 guy easily.
Fournier was great if he was 17, unfortunately he’s a 20 and not the calibre of a 20 for the Q. Had a couple nice plays but seems like he’s one second late to every play, not good for a 20.
Crosby was working hard but he’s still a little weak on the stick and loses a lot of battles. I’m hoping he gets his confidence back because there still seems to be something there.
Todd has actually surprised me after a shitty tryout earlier. He looked good last night. If he plays like Macphee he likely has a regular spot in the lineup, if he decides he’s a skill guy with no grit he will quickly fade away to 12/13 spot. Nice goal to boot last night.
Peitzche has amazing reads on plays! He has real strong puck skills and a nice shot. His only weakness is skating which is above average just awkward looking. He is very strong on the boards as well.
Fontaine wasn’t super noticeable but I think he was playing with moser and Wallace, so stronger line mates would help his game. Still looks like a promising future.
Levesque was everywhere last night. This kid looks like a steal with his speed and puck skills! He was killing penalties, on the PP at defence….seems like coaches are giving him lots of chances and he’s taking advantage.
Panzetto was better last night than I’ve seen earlier. Looks like he might be getting more comfortable. He made a few quick touch passes that were sweet and came close around the net a couple times also. I think he will be a solid player down the road.
Kilfoil looks like he’s starting to settle in also. He was lugging the puck a lot and looked really smart and confident on the PP.
Moser is a great pickup as number 13. He has only grown over the last couple years and I think he’s a late bloomer. Has smarts and skill let’s see what he’s got at 19, I’m betting he’s a solid player by then.
Wallace was an AP last night and played hard. A little behind the pace but he finished every check and is dangerous when he’s around the net. He’s gritty so he’s a great AP.
Schultz looks like a stud, makes things look easy, but sometimes tries to do to much. He will be a top d in the league this year.
Moravec is bland but he’s a very quiet solid stay at home d. He’s a great fit for Schultz or furlong who join the play more.
Mackinnon looked awesome last night. He’s an incredibly smooth skater with great speed. Loves the body and has a mean edge to his play. I’d hate to play vs him!!!
Martin is a lot like Moravec. Very quietly steady steady and a great fit with mackinnon.
Phillips is a future stud, he’s already showing signs of taking over the play. I’m thinking the second half of this season he explodes offensively.
Mackenzie is a little overwhelmed at times with the speed of some players. He’s very smart and offensively he reads plays well, but he needs to add strength to be a regular.
Rousseau was solid as usual but he made one save that shows why he’s considered to be amongst the elite. Man this kid is a gamer!

Anyone have any ideas what the lines may look like now that the preseason is winding done and got to see the guys play a bit !! They seem to be giving Kilfoil and Levesque every opportunity to be offensive players. Levesque I think will find himself a spot on both the PK and in offensive roles with his speed and compete level. Fontaine I think has a bit more offensive upside, but because he's not as explosive as either Kilfoil or Levesque I think it'll take more time for him to adjust. He's got high hockey IQ tho. Ponzetto... he frustrates me. I know he's still adjusting, and I'll being patient, but there's a lot of stuff with him where you can tell the physical tools are there, but goddamn is he bad in terms of being a perimeter player, not getting to the middle of the ice and just not using his shot. He's gotta clean that up to be effective. But yea, idk, I think Ponzetto gets every opportunity to play with Dumais and Vidicek, I think they try spreading it out with Cataford on line 2, maybe with Pietzsche and Fournier?

I think (and hope) there will be quite a bit of juggling and experimentation in the first few months of the season. The D is a lot more predictable, almost certain you'll see these pairs at even strength: Furlong - Moravec Martin - MacKinnon Schultz - Phillips

We should have pretty good specialty lines this season, sad we won’t have Lawrence and Doucet to bury a Shorthanded goal every game though lol. Just gotta find lines that will click at even strength. It’ll take a bit for Ponzetto to fit into the league, amongst other players, but I do think Fontaine is going to have a solid rookie season.

The guys you just mentioned should get plenty of ice tomorrow night with 6 of our guys away at NHL camps. Any idea how many guys Cape has out in comparison? Also, I assume the game will still happen down in Cape tomorrow night given the weather that is coming. Any idea if it being streamed?

The Eagles have four players away at camps (Squires, Burbidge, MacDonald & Schmitt). As for the game they're still promoting it so I'm assuming it's a go for tomorrow as for if it'll be streamed I have no clue if it was at Centre 200 I'd say ya it would be but tomorrow's game is at the Membertou Sports and Wellness Centre so no guarantees given how the Eagles do things usually. Edit: Seems like they might be streaming it. www.youtube.com/live/Og-xIejbjFE?si=XkUfPzZJ3gVbuuHO

Unsurprising. Looks like the Mooseheads will finish the pre-season 2-3 lol. 0-3 with rookie lineup and 2-0 with vets.

I forgot the Huard Jr trade (to Halifax) happened so late last year. It was on September 30th, more than a week after the season started. Still time for Halifax to grab a serviceable 20 year old to help make that 2nd line a little more formidable.
It's going to be a fun team to watch in the 1st half but at times I can see it being frustrating, basically running out the clock until the January trade deadline when the team makes their moves. This team doesn't have the offensive depth to run teams over every night, and I can see some tough losses happening if the big three go through a dry spell. The good news is there are quite a few young players on the team that will get a very good opportunity to compete for a spot on the team in the 2nd half, or to up their trade value in a potential deal.

The good news is there are quite a few young players on the team that will get a very good opportunity to compete for a spot on the team in the 2nd half, or to up their trade value in a potential deal. I think this was the play all along unless something very appealing feel in Cam’s lap. He’s waiting to see what’s left over from NHL camps. My personal pick but also very unlikely is Victo getting Brunet back and have to find a home for Cormier. This move would put this team in a position of strength. However like I said I just don’t see it playing out. I think the more likely move is Gill gets sent back to BC and Cam grabs Matt MacDonald for next to nothing. Why do people refuse to see Cam doesn’t trade young players? The player most likely to be traded away is Crosby. Crosby is this years Swan. He’s been give every chance possible but it never clicks and the team trade a stud will want a play to replace some ice time. It’s how Cam works. Best case Crosby finally clicks and he doesn’t get traded. Cam has faith in the players he has and does as much as he can to not trade them in go for it years. Usually it’s 1 of 3 things why he doesn’t. The Swan scenario like I already suggested. 2, they player asks for it. 3, there’s off ice issues that make the player not a fit. Cam’s MO is not to do future’s and try as hard to not trade a player. Last year Cam traded 2 players away and only one was involved in being a player back. The other was Orr and he just didn’t fit anymore. What he likes to do is keep players then trade them the year after for picks to start rebuilding. Look at 2019/20 season when he traded away Groulx, McIsaac, Lavoie, Kyte, Trepainer, and Flower. All of those trades directly compact this team today. Look for Cam to do the same especially when next year is a Mem Cup year and he will have name like Cataford, MacKinnon, Vidicek, and Rousseau to trade next year. You could add Schultz and maybe Furlong to that list too.

I honestly think the Maritime division will be a tad stronger than expected. While Bathurst, SJ, and Charlottetown aren't likely to compete, their young guys are all a year older and will likely still put up a fight. So I don't think there will be all that many blow outs this season, at least not in the first half. Bathurst has 10 19 YOs on their roster, and I'm not trying to be biased but they had a solid pre-season and could surprise some teams this year. Halifax going to have to play some big games early, then like you said, buy at Christmas.

Jordan Dumais stars in first rookie camp game with a pair of goals you got to think Dumais is going to get a long look with Columbus this year ! If he gets 10 game tryout and invite to team Canada it might be a long while before we see him this year ?
